CONVOCATION SUGGESTION WANTED W hat I* L ove? The m enders of the committee appointed by Richard Blalock to make plans for the political convocation to be held the week pre- whjch nf>ver existed. ceding the election on May l l are confronted with .several prob lems. They ask for the assistance of the students in working out details of this problem. It is relative to the convocation. The bachelor: Love is an em otion It wan first in- fileted upon the world by a s o f t headed novelist in need of copy. Realizing that it cannot consider every angle of the convo cation, and desiring to make the meeting as fair as possible for ail candidates, the committee is very anxious to have students submit in writing any suggestions that they may feel are worth while for the convocation. These should be addressed to The Texan, University Station, and they will be placed in the hands of Clinton Burnett, chairman of the committee. In making the suggestions for the first general political con vocation to be held on the campus, the Texan believes that it can present some points which must be settled by those in charge of making the plans. There are many others, but these appear to be the major problems. Should a candidate be allowed to have another speaker make his campaign talk at the convocation? Should there be a limit on the time of talks, and, if so, ju st how long should the candidate have to present his speech? What should be the order of speak ing? When should the convocation be held? Where should it be held, in the Methodist Church, the baw auditorium, or the Men’s Gym? Should some form of entertainm ent be provided? The date of the convocation is an important point. Should the meeting be held on Monday night, May 8, or Tuesday night, May 4, or should it be held at an earlier date? Suggestions should be mailed in as soon as possible in order that the committee will have time to study the convocation, and submit rules. OPEN FIR E ! With the spring elections but three weeks away, the first faint mutterings which precede the political tempest are indis tinctly heard. Although the honor system is only indirectly con cerned, and while no other question of similar magnitude will be nettled at the polls on May l l , it seems not at all improbable that the coming elections will mark a turning point in the history of our student government. C o m m i t t e e N o m i n a t e # Nominations for the It is not to be implied from this that the present adm inistra tion has not met with the approval of the student body. To the contrary, President Blalock has, in many respects, given a very able administration. But, at the same time, it must be admitted that few constructive measures have been introduced and carried into effect. It has rather been a year of dissolutions. The Honor Council admitted failure in enforcing the honor system. The prestige of the Senior Council, an important instrum ent of gov ernment, and one which should play a high role in its capacity as The committee on fellowships and an advisory body, received a serious rebuff. It is likely that its scholarships of tho graduate faculty influence will be impaired for some time. The Assembly and the Honor Council have had difficulties and each side has supported its contentions in a manner suggestive of bureaucrats m aintain ing their departmental prestige, rather than elective officers work ing in behalf of the interests they should represent. fellow ships were made by the commute on fe l lowships and scholarships of the grad uate faculty on April 12, follow ing a study of the records and q u a lifi cations of the applicants. Dodd, Dr, A. C. Ellis, and Dr. L. W. Payne, Jr. — o--------------- - The greater part of the officers now in power are quite aware of the situation. They fully realize that the fundamental diffi culty in our scheme of government lies in the fact th at there is no bason between the government in its adm inistrative and legis- lat Eve operations and in the various expressions of student opin ion concerning the issues which present themselves from time to time. T.U J H S BEBITE F (Continued from Page I) But this situation cannot be attributed to indifference to student opinion on the part of officials. There are few channels by w'hich student opinion may express itself. Moreover, the stu dent body shows little indication to make use of the channels al ready available to its use. Many aspects of the honor system question have been discased recently; but no one is sure as to the general concensus in any one in.»stan< e. How can a government be expected to act with vigor, intelligence, and decision under such conditions? The political convocation is unquestionably a helpful meas ure. No better indication <>f President Blalock’s clear insight into political conditions has been evinced than his advocacy of this If the student body accepts the convocation idea and measure. uses it to the full extent of its possibilities, the Blalock adminis tration will mark the transition from an old order to a new con dition of things. that maximum efficiency could not be attained under the present system . The negative put up a very good argument, and there were times when the decision was just a littie in doubt. The Arkansas men attempted to show that the air service is essen tially an auxiliary to the army and to the navv( and, therefore, not en separate titled to a position as a branch of national defense. T hey also pointed out many accomplish ments of the present system o f na But the success of the political convention depends alone tional defense in the United S tates, upon the student body. While full attendance at the convocation cannot be too strong ly urged, it must be realized th at this gathering is something more than a political rally. Those who go only with the idea of letting off a little surplus “fight sp irit’’ had better stay aw’ay. The convocation is intended for a turnover of student opinion. If an empty-headed rooter goes he w ill come away with nothing but a frog in his throat. The Texan has asked for constructive suggestions relative to the convocation. The attitude of the stu dent body in this will be largely determined by the nature of the response. The Texan indulges the hope that tnt* suggestions called for in this connection will actually start public participation in the campaign. Interest should not await the decisive shock of battle.
