I he sixty or so who were there will make possible a m o r e complete news service for The Texan, and less work for each individual . member of the stuff. We hope, however, th a t no one who has contemplated work- intr on The Texan will be discouraged because of the competi tion that will be offered. Tho Texan staff this year wil neces sarily be larger th an it has been in form er years and every one who has enough literary ability to pass English I, shou < be able to serve on The Texan stair in some capacity. The primary function of The Texan is, of course, to publish he news of the University community in the hest way possible. J-he secondary function, as we see it, is to provide practical training for those students who are interested in journalism. For this reason, no student will be deprived of a position on The Texan staff if he is able to write a story th a t complies with the news story form, that is readable and comprehensive. As students master reporting, they will be assigned feature-story writing, and will then be asked to try out as assistant issue editors, in which positions they edit copy and write hem s. On a large staff, promotion will naturally be slow, but any; member of the staff can easily prove by a large amount of constantly improving work th a t he is worthier of a higher posi- tion than the one he holds. Experienced men are now needed as issue editors and asso ciate issue editors, and if there is any man who formerly served j on The Texan staff in either position, who has not already sig-j nilled his intention of doing so, we earnestly request him to work again this year. “SCRAPS.’ Those who subscribed to The Texan this summer will remem- ber “ Types” by Josephine Lurie.
