Dr. W. R. White, president of B aylor University, sent a letter to Marvin Rogers, UT graduate assem blym an, in reply to a telegram Rogers sent protesting the “un sea tin g ” of N egro student Lovie Williams and his date at the U T -B ay lor gam e tw o w e ek s ago. T he follow ing is from Dr. W h ite ’s letter: the incident “ B aylor U n iversity had nothing to to do w h atever w ith which you refer. We pay rental to the Stadium Corporation for its use. The Stadium Corporation has given the job of ushering to the Boy Scouts. Even the Stadium C orporation has passed no such rule as w as applied to these N egro students. “ A Scout official w ho is over the Boy Scouts becam e nervous lest an incident occur and asked a policem an to advise about the m ores in W aco. T hey consulted no B aylor au th ority; not even a Stadium C orporation au th ority. but acted on th eir own. T hey assum ed the m ores of the com m u nity and ac ted without instructions. “ B aylor U niversity has on its ca m pus frequently m ixed groups repre sen tin g academ ic, scien tific, and stu dent organizations. T here has never been any problem or Incident on the cam pus. In fact, th ere sat two N e g roes tw o seats in front of me . . . in more c h o i c e sea ts than I had in crowded W aco Hall w h ere a big con cert w as being given by the B aylor U niversity O rchestra and Mr. Van U n born. N o incident occurred. “B aylor U n iversity had no chance in the regrettable to have any say episode. I am sure the Stadium Cor poration will p revent the possibility of such an incident in the future. “S in cerely, W. K. W hite, P resid en t, B aylor I n iv ersity .” We sincerely hof>e that, as Dr. White assu res us, “ the possibility of such an in cident in the fu tu re” has been prevented. Cow Palace Van Clibum. precocious pianist, giant of stature and style, w eaved a magic spell over G regory Gym s cow p a la c e con fines Sunday. B esides loudly applauding Mr. C lib u m ’s artistry, we noted: • The brilliant q u ality of the I niversity S ym p h on y O rchestra, conducted by A lex ander von Kreisler, almost “stole the s h o w ” in the opinion of m an y w h o atten d ed the concert. I ^ t ’s hear more and more and more of them . * * • I T's “ first c la ss” basketball court just didn’t do justice — acoustically, a t m ospherically, therm ally, etc. to a concert of this type. W h en — oh when — will a decent U niversity auditorium (able to ac com m od ate such overflow crowds and still than an airplane hanger provide more audio set-up) m ake the “big list” UT s building prospectus? A new I niversity auditorium w o u l d w ork w o n d e r s for cem en tin g the I niver- s ity ’s reputation as a cultural center. And, like everyo n e else, w e ’re just tired of sweating and straining to enjoy a c o n cert, performance, or keyn o te speaker on the campus.
