There had the lak< been a heavy frost th a t morning, and the sheltered spots on the shores were solid white, contrasting with the dark shadows beyond. Upon the quiet back water of the crekk was a thin coat ing of ice which broke at the slight est touch, along its cliffs and beside its crystal pools, until the little brook gave way interm ittent pools of stagn ant water. We found a shal lunch, low spring and cooked then circled back over the nearby hills During the whole morning and early afternoon we met not a single per sons. to Pe haps approaching examinations explanted the desertion of the lake, but I doubt it. There are hundreds of student*—this is no exaggeration —who do not even know th a t there is a University boathouse there, who do not know th at for a small sum they can rent a boat or be taken ac ross the lake in a motorboat, and who never see the beaut of the hill coun try v-t-st of Austin. The princely bequests and foundations that have been be stowed upon i n s t i t u t i o n s of learning by rich benefactors havo evoked all manner of praise. Universities such as Chicago, S ta n ford, and Vanderbilt owe their existence to these expressions of generosity w h i c h the m a k e r s of great fortunes, or the heirs of great fortunes, have w i s e l y bestowed upon agenc ies of culture. But the gift of Mrs. Stark is Of a different order. It has more than a material significance to us. This gift cannot he in terpreted in terms of monetary value, as in the Instance of lab oratory equipment or of buildings erected at a certain stipulated In passing on to us these many treasures, each one of which cost. is an expression of her love and her appreciation of art, Mriq Stark has endowed us with an inspiration toward aesthetic en joyment, rath er than making us the proprietors of so many cu rios and so many rare paintings. The significance of this gift, then, lies not in its mere value, hut in that it constitutes th<* University of T»*xas a trustee to a foundation, the beneficiaries of which are not only {hose who a t tend the University, but the people of the entire state. T H E OBSTRUCTIONIST The approaching examinations give rise to a word of w arn ing and admonition^ We are very busy, and do not like to be overrun with eases immediately after the holidays. Of course, our attitude is purely a selfish one; but we plead with the would* lie cheats and frauds not to add to the already too heavy collec tion of scalps which dangle from our belts, rustling dryly in the warm breeze of student honor. The other day an ex-student, who had cheated his way to an audience with the Honor Council and lied himself into a suspen sion, modestly told ti chairman that he was an aristocrat of the Old South. “ Why,” quoth he, “ I am a direct lineal descendent of Henry Clay.” IL* received the reply, “ ‘T hat is honor’s scorn which challenges itself at* honor’s born and is not like the sire’.” Moral: Don’t come before the Council with the plea that the Uni- versity of Texas is signally honored by the presence of a descend ent of an illustrious progenitor. We feel that it is no fault of the ancestor. Our beatifications upon him! May he rest in peace! We recognize no aristocracy of blood or legal tender, The only peerage we know is honor. This sarm* aristocratic son of the Old South pleaded his pre sumption of innocence. But when two papers are identical, and the innocence of one w riter is established, the presumption falls. As someone has expressed it: “ Presumptions are bats of the law, that flit about in the twilight of uncertainty, but disappear in the sunshine of actual knowledge.” Doubtless the twenty-odd stu dents whom the Council has this fall relieved of fu rth er scholas tic responsibility would I* glad to attest to the fact that the pre sumption of innocence in which we indulge will not shield ele phantine dishonesty. We believe in the student body, iii its support of the honor system, We believe in tho unqualified co-operation of the faculty in mast resoeeU. But we ben no love for the obstructionist, be he student or instructor. When a man accepts a position on our faculty, he agrees to accept a government by the students. When such instructor tells his students he does not believe in the honor system, he not only breaches his ag reem en t; but he destroys the morale of his class, encouraging his students to carry the germ to [heil other classes, We plead with such instructors to be a bit more constructive in their thought and influence, to require the pledge to be written out in full, and to read it carefully on each paper. Pity the man with nothing lo offer but destructive criti cism, the moron who hides behind the professorial cloak, con ceiving intellectuality to lie evidenced by moral degeneracy and un conventionality. But the success or failure of student government rests ul timately in the hands of the students, lf you cannot pass your courses honestly, fail honestly. Do not place upon the shoulders of the Honor Council the responsibility of taking your credit from you. The task is unpleasant and distasteful !n extreme. If you cheat, you will be detected; if you are detected, you will be pen alized. Have regard for us and for yourselves.
