Brackenridge didn’t knew* what he w as in for when he gave the lands bordering Lake Austin (next to Tom Mil- ler Dam ) to the University of Texas for educational purposes.” It looks like most of the big ruckuses being raised these days concern what » right, w h at’s wrong, and what oughta be done with that land. J u s t recently it was the dispute— includ ing a long list of student petition signa tu re s to the Board of Regents—over es tablishing student-faculty w a terfront and rec re atio n a l facilities on the property n o w occupied by the private B ennett's Boat T his bu® and cry has evidently run into th e old brick wall of "no available fund, Docks. in sight ” Vow from thp Last end of the Brae Wen- ridge Tract area is com ing the ole familiar __ for ba tter married student hous ing. They claim the “em ergency provision” tenem ent section of present “low-cost mar ried student housing” is a disgrace to the U niversity of Texas. One quick glance at the housing pro these units are no jects will show that c u t- r a te W aldorf-A sterias, by any means. So what is to he done about all this? Moat married students can’t afford to buy the sort of housing that they really need. Should the University foot the hills for the difference? Should the University sup port married student housing when they expect all other strident housing projects to s u p p o r t them selves? Where is the m oney to come from when the V of T Is now heading for a trem endous fight on its hands to preserve the facilities — and state support — that it has now? T hese are all key questions — but a quick adm inistrative sh ru g of the shoul de rs . . . perhaps a wistful, tearful look is not going to solve the problem. First of all, the U n iversity should m ake a thorough survey of the m arrie d student housing situation — find o u t just exactly how much the units would cost. Perhaps vim? of the married student crop could buy highcr-coxt, small proflt- m aking housing of high quality that would help support the overall project. A com plete poll of all married student* should he taken; exact needs should he item ised. Dr. H a s k e w says th a t no clear estim ates a l e a v a il a b le for th e exact cost of such housing. These should he gathered. Such Institutions aa T exas AAM and the University of Arkansas already have s i z e a b l e m arried student housing project*. If federal loans could he gotten for Kin- solving Dormitory and the I nion expan sion, we see no reason why such could not he pushed for married student hous ing. More than 4,000 students at I T are m arried. We can no longer consider their presence as a “po st-w a r em ergency situa tion.” lf the U niversity sincerely wants to m eet the needs of the student body, to help aid in the financial problems th a t inhibit or prevent a college education . . . then he re ’s an a re a that m ust be tackled Immediately. Docks. T his hue and cry has evidently run into th e old brick wall of ‘‘no available funds in sight.” Now from thp Kast end of the Bracken ridge Tract area is com ing the ole familiar howl — for better married student hous ing. They claim the “em ergency provision” tenem ent section of present “low-cost mar ried student housing" is a disgrace to the U niversity of Texas. One quick glance at the ho m in g pro jects will show th a t these units are no c u t- r a te W a ld o rf-A sto ria s, by any means. So what Is to he done about all this? Moat married students can’t afford to buy the sort of housing that they really need. Should the University foot the hills for the difference? Shonld the University *np- port married student housing when they expect all other student housing projects to s u p p o r t them selves? Where is the m oney to come from when the U of T is now heading for a trem endous fight on its hands to preserve the facilities — and state support — that it has now? These are all key questions — hut a q u irk ad m in istrativ e sh ru g of the shoul d e rs . . . perh ap s a wistful, tearful look is not going to solve th e problem. f i r s t of all, the U niv ersity should m ake a thorough survey of th e m arried stu d en t housing situation — find out Just e x actly how much the u n its would cost. Perhaps some of the married student crop could buy higher-cost, small profit- making housing of high quality that would help support the overall project. A com plete poll of all married students should he taken; exact needs should be item ized. Dr. H askew says th a t no clear e stim ates a re available for th e e x a ct cost of such housing. These should be g athered. Such Institutions as T ex as AAM and the University of A rk a n s a s alre ad y have sizeable m arried student housing project*. If federal loans could he gotten for Kin- solving Dormitory and the Union expan sion, we see no reason why such could not he pushed for married student bows ing. More than 4,000 students at UT are m arried. W e can no longer consider their presence as a “ p o st-w ar em ergency situa tion.” If the U niversity sincerely wants to m eet the needs of th e student body, to help aid in th e financial problems t h a t inhibit or prevent a college education . . . then h e re ’s an are a th a t must be tackled lmm ediatelv.
