Mr Sehoch and Dr. Harper, to further the interests of science in the I mveisity, recently secured the services of Mr. Roberson to deliver a lect lire on “ Liquid Air*' in the I Ad versity auditorium Saturday night. March loth. Tho proceeds of tho lecture, if any remained after the ex penses were paid, were to be appro priated for the benefit of the band, which is sadly in need of better in struments. Tho lect ii re was extensively adver tised, and not withstanding tho rath er high price at which tickets bad to be sold in order to meet the expenses of the venture, a good audience greeted the speaker when he made his appearance upon the platform. At first Mr. Roberson attempted to soar skyward in oratorical effusions that may be called a dismal failure; but he soon settled down to business and gave us. all points considered, per haps the best, most entertaining and instructive lecture we have had from the platform of the auditorium this season. The following points were gleaned: Liquid A ir in this country is man in Boston, lait at ufactured only present about a dozen factories for purposes of its manufacture are in process of construction in various cities of tin* I nited States. It is ii perfectly colorless and odorless fluid very much resembling water in Its temperature is 312 appearance. degrees below zero, and it is obtained t em peru t ti re of by by means ordinary atmosphere altogether mechanical. Some rot ton was first frozen and then passed out among the audience. Bater *otnc beefsteak was froz.i n and broken into fragm ent* which each observer < m ild exam ine for him self. A handkerchief was frozen Mud crumbled to powder bv the pressure of Mr. Roberson’s fingers, us was a I so the paper whir ii came wrapped around Flowers were frozen jind red need to powder, w bib* others were allowed to resume their original if was temperature, and found that their odor and hrillianev were not dost roved. the steak. 'PI,#* lei tun r placed some i berries in ;i tumbler of tin* liquid air. u hi* Ii were immediately frozen to the tem perature of 312 degrees below zero. although the liquid was boding vio lently. The nitrogen boiled awa\ quid er than the oxygen, ami after the former had evaporate I a number of pen points were welded together in pairs in the same tumbler with the frozen cherries, although the tem perature of the steel was 325 d e g r e e s above zero: and this by means of an ordinary parlor match. An ice tum bler was next con st meted and in it some carbon was burned without melting the ice. although the tumbler was broken into several fragments bv a miniature explosion near the end et the experiment. in ;i stone dish, a hammer placed handle was placed in the center of the box, and mercury poured around lf ; next liquid air was poured into tile dish aud outside the box and thus the hammer of mercury frozen. Next the box was removed from around the mereun and the hammer frozen more solidly, after which pine blocks were nailed together with tin1 ham mer. A number of other experiments were made to show the wonderful qualities of tin* new liquid, especially ifs expansive power, as under ordin ary circumstances it evaporates very rapidly and expands sun times. Tho speaker thinks that ere long it will take the place of ice for household in purposes, the place of powder warfare, and the place of steam as ,a motive power, to say nothing of it- use surgery and other Judging from branches of science. Saturday night’s experiments one would he inclined to agree with Mr. Roberson. in Dr. Harper was an interested spectator, observing each experiment very closely. He also introduced Mr. Roberson to the audience. It is to he regretted that the lec ture came at an inopportune time. Many of the students were at homo on vacation, and many of those who remained, failed to avail themselves of the opportunity. The proceeds which the hand would have received have been diminished accordingly. The praises which the lecture re ceived are richly merited. The lec ture was unique, instructive, enter taining.
