The $8,000 goal was small in compari son— to UT in the past and other schools in the present. Goals of $10,000 and $14,- 000 have been set and made by students in previous years. Recently the University of Washington with students raised $16,000 in their Chest drive. 15,000 * Basing the am ount on individual pro portions, this y e a r’s goal a t the F orty Acres asked only 75 cents of each student, an insignificant am ount by the time it is divided among the seven groups under the Chest. The Campus Chest committee worked hard a t every angle. Very few students missed being asked to donate. Their re fusal to do so made the committee resort towards the end of last week to asking for groups to donate together. The drive has for the last two years tried to reach its goal by personal rath e r than group solici tations, in order to avoid putting so much of the burden on fraternities and sorori ties. The approach this year also omitted threats of numerous tin cans next year if the drive failed. Maybe it shouldn’t have. The appeal to students to give because they personally w ant to ra th e r than be cause their group trea su re r tells them to has failed twice. If we have separate drives next year, we deserve them. b o m i . f luau h a : It. took man 500,000 years to progress from making fire with two sticks to doing it with one, and to learn that if he dragged woman by the hair, she, by nature of her rights, could d rag him by his hair. The latter thesis is still being debated. All this began in the Stone Age, con tinued through the Bronze, Iron, Steam, Air, and Atomic Ages. If the 500,000 years were compressed into 50 years, man would have used all but one year in chang ing from inveterate hunting habits to vil- ge settlement. Halfway through the 50th year, prin tin g was discovered; the ach ievements of the Greeks would be only t hree months back, and Christianity would he two months old. The printing press was put into use only a fortnight ago, and we have used steam one week. The air and atomic influences under which we now live wouldn't come about until December 31. By this comparison the new Hydrogen Age (or H A ), which we have ju s t now entered, is not due until way next year. The last age, the Atomic Age, lasted only seven actual years.
