M. 8. a a a “S U B JE C T S ” Does the average University graduate realize the relation that exists between history, economics, and literature, unless that relation has been insisted upon constantly? Does the average student realize that knowledge is not merely dividing courses into “subjects,” but in relating those “subjects” ? Men are graduated from the University and especially from the professional schools of the University with a very limited, sm attering knowledge of twenty-one courses, which will not prove of any great value to the student because the course of in struction is often too limited. It is a fact th at all subjects given in the curriculum are related. Students still continue to pick their “subjects” to fit the] hour or professor rather than chose the subject in relation to the other work they are taking. What is needed at the University is a two y ears’ general! course during which time the freshman will Is- allowed to study what he desires. Then, a t the end of the second year, he will have decided on some course and special field, and will choose some branch of work to specialize in during the last two years of his college work. Such a system will give to the g r a d u a te s of the University a basis for real culture and not merely a smattering of technical education. It will ab o give the freshman a chance to find him self and what he wants to take rather than |>ermit him to fly off at a tangent in his school work.—S. H. ON GRUMBLING. it would be a line job to take a census of the grumblers in the world, and then try to find out just how many of them had any real reason for grumbling. Over half the people grumble from force of habit, and the others grumble because the other half have formed the habit, and they feel that they must be in style. University students grumble about everything—from the classroom to the food which the landlady so carefully prepares. They grumble mainly because it Is the fashionable thing to do. lf they do not get a holiday they grumble, and if they do, they say it comes at such an inopportune time, or th at the weather is bad and they will have to stay at home all day. The food which is served to them never satisfies them. There was one girl who grumbled about all the food set before her yet Khe was the biggest eater at the table. If the landlady tries to please, she is sadly out of luck. The fastidious delight in eating asparagus on toast, and the more hefty ones demand heavier ra tions. Not long ago a geology student was grumbling about his three hours of indoor laboratory, “ I don't see why a fellow has to stay I ’d like to get out and hike indoors on a pretty day like this. about over the country. This lab gripes me like poison.” It was riot long before the time came for this young man to go on * geology hike. It was a beautiful day, too—but he was grum b ling about it. *1 hate these hikes. They tire a fellow to death They say you can't get credit for the course unless you take them. That's the only reason I'm here.” th If the grumbler would stop long enough to see himself in the ridic ulous hg.it of a grumbier, he would stop.— Mabel Mansell. the grumbler.
