Ju d g e B a tts described the historical and economic conditions of the U n i versity while Dr. W aggoner was president, He said that the schools of the South were devastated by the C iv il W a r and that education was almost extinct. Due to the fact that Texas had not been sub jected to as much destruction a- other Southern States and there was more hope of a pleasant fu ture, educators and good teachers from over the SjoUtJh were a t tracted. This was one of the rea sons that the U n iv e rsity was so fortunate in obtaining :-uch men as Dr. W aggoner for leaders in the days of its beginning. Ju d g e Batts said that the C onfederacy was also a great fa cto r in turning out great men trained to lead and in spire and that it was the historic event that had much to do w ith the molding of the character of Dr. W aggoner. The diplom atic abilities of Dr. W aggoner were point* d out by the speaker in a description of the early riva lrie s between churches and factions in regard to w hether the U n iv e rsity should exist or not. He said that th** people of Texas were essen- tia ly religious the back ground to which they were ac customed and that the U n iv e rs ity represented to them some ideas and fu tu re that they did not agree with.
