JAMES MCCASLIN IS t o f f p h o t o b y S t u t z e n b u r g Security Officer Likes Night Beat By S U E S E I T Z Through the dark, empty corri dors of Garrison Hall often can be heard the light step of James B. McCaslin, one of seven campus security officers. He hurried up to the third floor to punch a time clock, then strolled down to the Law Building. His quick, lively pace belies his age. “ Not many folks could guess how old I am,” he smiled. “ Sixty- eight. Why, I’ve got two growm sons and a daughter. I keep young from exercise and fresh air.” He was born n e a r Temple, and has been a farmer most of his life. “ But I’ve been on the force at the University for nine years-yTonger than anyone else,” he stated. Mem orial M useum Gets Two Rare Documents in Garland Adair, curator o f his the Texas torical documents Memorial Museum, announced Monday the acquisition o f a docu ment bearing the signatures of two signers of the Texas Declara tion o f Independence. The Texas Heritage Foundation presented a legal instrument in the form of an appeal bond. The 115- year old document bears the signa tures of Robert Hamilton and Col- lin McKenney. This week the night security of ficers were issued uniforms like the day policemen. they wore civilian clothes. Previously “ We sure are proud of them,” McCaslin said. “Now we can be spotted easily, and we’ll look much neater.” ★ “I like this night beat,” Mr. McCaslin confided. Nice and cool. Peaceful. I never have any trouble with the students.” in Mr. McCaslin, who rolls his own cigarettes, paused the Law Building for a smoke with a weary law student. “I really like those boys,” he said. “Such gentlemen, all of them, and such hardworking fellows.” Mr. McCaslin is a hard-working fellow himself. During his shift, from 7 p.m. to 5:30 a.m., he checks eleven buildings four times each, punches 4 8 time keys. He carries a three and one-half pound time clock, a billy stick and a bunch of keys. After punching th* clock on the third floor of the Music Building and giving the building a thorough once-over, he rested on a bench by Littlefield Fountain. But not until he had spread a handkerchief out on the bench. He didn’t want to get his new trousers dirty. Mr. McCaslin praised Chief Stromquist’s work in obtaining the new' uniforms. “He is really a swell fellow. H e’s been doing police work for twenty years. He walks the U*at with us at night now and then.” i t Fires are one of Mr. MeCaslin’s chief worries. Most of them are caused by careless smokers, he said. He also thought better light ing would lessen security risks. “During the war we had a lot of prowlers, and from time to time we’ve had trou> a with dogs g et ting in the buildings and chewing things up, but the campus is rela tively quiet now. “Occassionaliy we have to res cue a student who gets looked in a building after closing hours. We lock IO. the Music Building at Some buildings will open from the inside after locked, hut they're not that one. So the kids have to phone us to get them out.” Care of Handicapped Moral Says Johnson “Approximately 15 m i l l i o n Americans suffer one or more se rious handicaps,” said Dr. Wendell Johnson, chairman of the Council on Speech Pathology and Audi ology at the State University of in one Iowa, Wednesday night, of the two speeches he made in Austin.
