The DANLY TeXAN, Wednesday, April 22 1953 Page 3 sh. 2>J( SUe5 f t h a * b e e n d u l l , h a s n ’t i t ? The preponderance of planned questions ave)* original ones, and even the scarcity j>f those, at Stum p Speaking last night, jas just another indication of the apathe t i c a l ! itude student government is faced with in this election. Campaigning in the opposed elections has been exciting enough, but three cam paigns out of a possible ten are lean pick ings. The only possible interpretation of the situation, aside from pure lack of interest, is that the political forces on the campus are going through a period of mutation. Interest has shifted from winning posi tions to m aking organizations stronger. Exam ples of this are found in the arti cles on the Representative Party, Student Party, and Independents, found on this ? Take another e x a m p le ........... You and your room-mate are on affable terms. You have classes together, you study together, you both make bad grades in a certain course. The night before a quiz he, through some hook or crook or office key duplication, has gotten a copy of the questions and plans to study by them. If you refuse to use them, he will think you foolish and you might flunk the quiz. l f you use them, it’s an abject thwart- ing of scholastic honesty. What would you do? Don t h edge, P ledge page. Considering that the stories are based on interview s from biased members of the groups, we advise you to read them with a grain of salt. And compare. Reading the lines and between them, we conclude: 1. Backing by the Representative Party, or Clique, does not necessarily mean that the votes of all Clique members are promised to you. In fact, there is no string ent commitment. 2. Independent leadership depends upon outstanding individuals, not organization. Most of such leadership has shifted to the Student Party. 3. Because the Student Party refuses to consider candidates who might seek Clique it has become the anti-Clique backing, force, thus substituting for Independent leadership. 4. Independents, gaining training in the Student Party and to a limited extent in the Representative Party, might, after a few more elections, be strong enough to campaign by themselves. BUT, one thing surely is above-board evident. For student government to have the enthusiasm and interest it will need throughout re-organization next year, stu dents today must demonstrate their in terest by voting, no matter how small the ballot, A person’s vote is never dull. c » I* M .
