In the homes of Texas, student .sentiment, student action carries the weight that makes the strength. When students unite to act, however, then the individual and the group becomes separate factors in the eyes of the public. It is a fact well remembered. If you feel that attending classes now would be a breach of your faith in the University’s principles, th^n don’t attend class. l f you feel that the present situation is only an easy w ay to get out of class, to escape a lecture or a lab, to play a hand of bridge or see a show, then you have no right to a voice in the fight for T h e l ’niversity of Texas and the people who make the school. The University student body needs its strength from untiy— unity in purpose as well as in method. Either do a part or don ’t u k e part. Fifteen minutes later Board Chairman John H. Bickett opened the door of historic Room 336 and m ade one of the f e w spontaneous announcements to the press which w ere issued officially by the Board durng the tw enty-fve hours of sessions m eeting of the next two days. In the lobby outside the door sat about thirty people, fifteen of whom w ere rep resentatives of the press of Galveston, Houston, Austin, and Dallas. These people sat, smoked, speculated, strolled up and down the corridors for tw en ty hours in tw o days, leaving only to grab Short Story a bite to eat in constant fear o f the story's breaking before they returned — or to telephone again that they had no story but the speculation and o cca sional crumbs of reluctant half-state ments which could be third-degreed out of people who emerged momentarily from the smoke-filled room. The Regents would not state that progress w as being made. They -would not say th at the session w as almost over; they would not say that they exp ected to m eet for some time yet. All they would say -was, “ At the end of the m eet ing statem ents w ill be issued.” After two tw elve-hour days of almost constant tension, the Regents emerged, announced that their statements were prepared and that they had nothing more to say. Several of them checked out o f the hotel before Secretary Leo Haynes had finished reading the sta te ments. The thirty staunch standbys spent twenty-four hours getting an hour’s statements.
