The main point made by Dr. Vinson w as that some m easures be taken by which the available fu n d s would be made open for current use. B u d get I* Reduced The Board o f R egents has made its recom m endations for the U niversity budget for tw o years to come, on the basis o f expenditures during the pres ent year. T he am ount asked for has been the sam e as that shown in the current expenses. The total appro priation for the U niversity asked for is approx by the Board o f R egents im ately $1,663,000. The Board of Control has subtracted about $500,- 000 from this figure. According to the points that Dr. Vinson made in his speech last night before the com m itte this cu ttin g by the Board o f Control m eans th a t es sential positions and departm ents in the present U n iv ersity will have to be if no changes are dispensed w ith, made the in recommendations. The estim ate of the Board o f Control was made upon the budget o f two years ago, when the available fund was a t the use of the U n iversity, but which is not sub ject to use a t present. the present sta te o f Dr. Vinson went on to point out that there had been a f if t y per cent student increase since the tim e o f this old budget, and that the U n iversity w as like every other business in stitu tion, in that it m ust meet com petition from othqr institutions, who m ake their bids for students and mem bers o f the present U niversity fa cu lty . By this g rea t decrease in the size o f the budget. Dr. Vinson said that th e U n i versity would be forced to giv e up m any o f the valuable men co n stitu tin g its faculty. W ould Reduce Student Body Sum m arizing Dr. V inson’s a rg u ments in short, one or more o f these things must essen tially happen if the appropriation for the U n iv e r sity be cut as suggested by the Board o f Con trol: the size o f the student body will in some m anner be greatly reduced by necessity; scholastic and otherw ise, will be g rea tly reduced; it w ill become necessary to increase 'the fees for entrance, w hich w ill p ra c tic a lly am ount to the sam e th in g as standards, the (C ontinued on P age F ou r) SOCIAL CALENDAR For W eek E nding F ebruary 26. The selection of the play is a very happy one, and marks an epoch in our college dramatics. The drama wan produced first in the celebrated Wyndhnm Theatre in London, where, for a protracted per iod it played to packed house*. Later it was produced with great success in New York. It might be pertinent to state here that the big Universities of the country-, and it is to be hoped that Texas belongs among them, have in the last few years presented such plays with startling success. They are marked for the fact that the pre- the ama- sed ation s are free tuerishness so patent in mi st unpro fessional preformances.
