Jones ’22 Marjorie Mathis, ’22 A fton W ynn, ’20 Richard Jonas, '21 ARE WE READY FOR THE HOMECOMING? In the fall of 1916 was conducted one of the most successful homecomings that was ever held in the South. This was on the occasion of the inauguration of Dr. Vinson as President of the University of Texas and of the annual game with A. & M. There were old students from all over the United States pre sent at the big rally held the night before the game. Former cheer leaders and football stars vied with prominent lawyers and doctors in telling the awe-stricken freshmen of the good old days when Schulz’s beergarden was in flower, and A. & M. was beaten regularly every Thanksgiving. The next day the j biggest crowd ever seen on Clark Field watched the Longhorns j ride roughshod over the Farmers. There has not been such a homecoming since that day. Com- ; mencements have been witnessed by a group of seniors, few bacculaureate speakers, the faculty, and little more. But t h i s ! year commencement promises to be the occasion of just such; another celebration as was the 1916 homecoming. The ex students will be here in force. The association is already at work notifying all the former students. They intend to do their* part toward making the first real annual homecoming a success. The rest devolves on the student body here. The Circus is our first job that we must see through. From all indications, it is going to be a success under the leadership and m anagement of Al DeViney. But it cannot be a success, nor can the home coming itself if the students do not remain through the days It is our duty as well as our privilege to meet the former set. students when they return to see the University as it is. They I will be here from civilian life as well as directly from overseas. Let us all be there to welcome them with the biggest, jolliest mass of students the University has yet assembled. CONCERNING FIRING LINES It is only natural that during the next two w eeks student opinion will be excited over the trial that is to take place. The usual stream of Firing Line articles is already beginnin gto flow into the Texan office. The Texan w elcom es any expression of student opinion that is reasonable. Without such articles, we might come to the conclusion that student opinion as an active force was about to die out; but those who contemplate writ ing anything for this column will please bear in mind th;tt there will be many others wanting the same space. Some articles will have to be cut out because of their length and generality. To get a concensus of campus thought, it will best serve the purpose to write short, concise statements and arguments. These will stand the best chance of being published. MORGAN CALLAWAY GETS DUE HONORS (C ontinued fro m Page I.)
