A part from the central place of philosophy in the tradition o f Ox ford. there are three other factors that make it philosophically pre of em inent. One is the method teaching. As everyone knows who has tried, you can’t learn philos ophy from lectures, from the pro cess that Carlyle described as sit ting like a pitcher and being pump ed into. You learn to think as you learn to run, by trying and be ing coached; and that is the Ox ford notion o f teaching. You are given a tutor or supervisor for whom you write frequent papers. and you must discuss and defend ! vienuemen: these productions in th e privacy of confronted his room.
