Herein lies the college man’s opportunity to serve his fel low-; to interpose deliberation between their impulses and action and in that way to control both. r The Texan prints a story about the Battle of Kegs” of January, 1778. It is wed I the date is given, or some critic might use it as a text for an arraignment of University sobriety. — H A R - Professor Armstrong lectured last night on “ A Trip Through Southern Europe.” which was announced as of special interest to English students. Over against scholar ship they are placed as the greatest tormentor of that his toric champion of academic arena. They are the cause of professorial woes, low grades, untimely termination of collegej ate careers, and consequent pa rental pangs and tribulation. But student activities should be differentiated from the multi tude of parasitical activities and inactivities sailing under a false It is trur that a number Hag. of students indulge to their det riment in the worthy and neces sary activities, but the great ma jority ot those who engage in extra-curriculum pastimes to their detriment are not, strictly speaking, engaging in student ac- t iv it ies, according to the common "I acceptation of that term. Leafing on the Campus bench es, attending germans, playing pool or frittering away time in idle gossip, though not in the same category as to merit, are nevertheless not student activi ties. Student activities proper are those activities which supple ment the curriculum in bringing about the greatest improvement in student life, especially making possible the greatest benefit from the community life of stu dents. Do away with such ac tivities entirely, and University life would be robbed of a very! valuable and vital element. I he problem is to make stu dent activities proper so efficient and so beneficial that they will tend to eliminate activities for eign to the purpose of a univer sity and better supplement the work of the curriculum.
