March 22 1988 D ressendorfer ’ s shutout win fans flam es o f strikeout duel By ERIC VAN STEENBURG Daily Texan Staff The rules to the con test are simple — all you have to do is strike out more hitters than the other guy. A n d as of now the stakes are sim ple too. But if Texas pitchers kirk Dressendorfer and Eric Stone continue pitching the w av they are now, the stakes mav change Dressendorfer took the lead in strikeouts M onday w hen he fanned 1T batters in the Longhorns 11-0 win over bu! Ro^s State University. W ith the 13 strikeouts, the freshman from Pearland improved his sea son total to 73, one better than Stone w ho set a Texas record with 19 strikeouts in a nine-inning game last week. For Dressendorfer, w ho limited the Lo bos to only four hits w hile throwing his first shutout of the year, the contest be tween the two is the kind he likes It s a good one to have because it keeps us pumped u p ," said Dressendorfer, who grinned at Stone in the Texas dugout after he recorded his 13th strikeout of the day "A n d since he's been pitching before me 1 know w hat I have to shoot for when 1 go out there. But I'm sure he'll get more than one [strikeout] on Friday " That w ill be Stone s next chance to retake the lead w hen the 1 onghorns pla\ TCT in their Southwest Conference opener Stone is scheduled to start the tust game \gainst Sul Ross, however, Dressen dorter (7-1) was the one in the spotlight as only two of the four hits he gave up left the infield. In addition to the strikeout num bers, Dressendorfer didn't allow a walk as Texas won tor the 31st time in 16 games and reached double digits in strikeouts for the sixth consecutive game Sul Ross Coach Byron Brooks praised the Dressendorfer s control and velocity two things that kept the Lobos ott balance all day.
