Thursday, September !9, 1957 THE D A IL Y T EX A N Page 2 r - f - \ I T T T Texas lech: Trouble And so the Texas Tech incident moves Into another round—-with blow-by-blow exchanges becoming more and more heated. Among the latest developments are resolutions from the Tech faculty charging that the Tech Board of Directors violated principles of academie freedom and accreditation s tandar ds on in July when they ousted three Tech professors- Drs. Abernethy, Greenberg, and Stensland in secret ses sion without hearing. faculty tcnun* Southern Association of College and Secondary said it will begin an investigation Sep Schools ha tember 23, and the American As ^Gelation (J t ni* v e r s i f y Professors has indicated it also may make a probe. Earlier, the Tech Board, meeting August 17— a month after the trouble first started, voting 8*1 again denied the professors an open hearing. No matter who is to blame, it is gratifying to see the concern and sincere interest which has been ex p r e s s e d from all parts of the country— from fellow professors and educators and students, from politic ians and farmers and businessmen all concerned when violations of academic freedom supposedly occur. It would have been a sad day, indeed, had their dismissal for reasons unstated been met with a pas s i v e resistance from fear of endangering job or position. As from the start, there are still too many un answered questions. W hy weren’t reasons given for tile ouster? Tho professors have requested a public hearing, and it would seem lf only the trio’s teaching were involved and reasons for dismissals were well founded, that only the professors would stand to l o s e from such a hearing. Th** Lubbock newspaper of>enly said that Hie re movals resulted from political and social pressure Abernethy was a tho Democrats of leader Texas, the liberal wing of the Democratic Party, and Greenberg had publicly stated he favored inte gration. in Other unofficial reasons have come to the fore three informal meeting between the following an professors and two Board officer^: 1) Charges that Abernethy, former regional di r e c e i v e s a f r o m work as a mediator in rector of the Wage Stabilization B o a r d , large outside labor-management disputes. i n c o m e 2) Two petitions (signed by about five Tech stu dents) asking for the removal of Dr, Greenberg. 3) Letters from students, alumni, and others critical of the professors. -1) Abolition of the Adult Education Program (and thus the Job of Dr. Per Stensland) as an economy measure Influence of some of these reasons may be dis to di‘"gruntled students; credited and attributed almost every professor has his share. t i t h e r s have speculated, in tin* case of Stensland, that, the adult program C p t n s o r e d by funds from the F or d Foundation) was ent irely tor* liberal for the Conservative Board A less widely circulated reason bas been advanced that the r is e in some way involves th* 'Tech a d mi nist rati on and tile Board wishes to save T e c h’s face. t he har d Even then, It I reasonabl e men, fi of their a ’t i<>n I po refloat cd Iv f Col- 5 Will m u c h , T e c h ■vc* the XOS i of r i r di n ll Ii 'I* p h o n e d I lr. Cancellation of "Ja z z at the Philharm onic'’ and “ Encyclopedia of Ja z z " w ai met with much displeasure by members of the committee. E v e r y contract which the managers of these show's sign has a c la u s e in it which states that they m ay cancel at any time. The Committee on the other hand does not have this prerogative. Despite the fact that this unfortunate situation has oc curred. Miss Lillian Seller, business manager for the Col lege of Fine Arts, states that in almost e v e ry case in the past in which such a problem has arisen, a better show has been booked. Also, the other outstanding shows w hich have been booked are all great ones and should more than satisfy any enthusiastic theater goer. “ Evolution of Jazz,” the replacement announced for “ E n cyclopedia of Ja z z " on Novem ber I , has now also been can celed. Therefore, until another show is booked, the date w ill remain open with no C E C show scheduled. The Com mittee is also seeking a replacement for “ Jazz at the P h il" and will announce the name and date of the attraction as soon as the contract has been signed. Because of the cancelation there will be no show on Septem ber 30 as originally scheduled. The C E C ’s first presentation w ill he on October 7 when "T h e F o u r Freshm en’’ give two con certs in one evening.
