it news? From the theoretical stand­
point, yes. From tho standpoint that 
the stories will be carried by the out 
side papers, regardless of the Daily’s 
action, yes.

But what about the effect on Mich­
igan and the Michigan student body? 
Are faults best corrected by making a 
candid admission of the facts and thus 
seeking a reform? Or by refusing to 
admit the existence of the fault ? 
Is 
not this much like trying to put out 
fire with fire? 
Is it b etter to save the 
particular individual and make a bad 
precedent, or to clear our decks en ­
tirely? To have no skeletons in the 
closet ?

Education, of Course, is the Twee 
tieth century method of reform. But 
what is to be done, when education 
fails?

would be severely criticised for 
such unjust publicity.

Not long ago we brought upon 
our heads the censure of the stu ­
d e n t * by publishing the* names 
of the members of our staff who 
had been found falling below the 
standard in their work. We be­
lieved then that we were .justi­
fied. The men had been elected 
on m erit; the students had been 
advised that these men wert* 
elected on m erit; and when the 
advisory board found that they 
were not keeping up the stand­
ard, we felt that the students de­
served to be advised of that, too. 
We still believe we wen* right.

The policy of telling the good 
and suppressing tin* bad is out 
of place in a student body of 
2000 men and women. As has 
been truly said, “The suppres­
sion of one crime breeds a thou­
sand more.”

What are you going to say 
when you read in your morning 
paper that your classmate, John 
Doe. has been expelled for cheat 
mg; and that your chum. Rich­
ard Roe, was reprimanded for 
getting drunk? We do not say 
that wre will adopt this policy, 
but we are seriously considering 
it, and if the Students’ Council 
will furnish us with the names 
we are now firmly of the' opinion 
that we will publish them.
