Side 1 Yale University Department of Classics Box 1967, Yale Station New Haven, Connecticut Rec May 25, 1950 20 May, 1950 Dear Sir John, I have just had word of the passing of Miss Alice Kober on the sixteenth of May, and I fear that all of us working on the Minoan scripts have lost much in losing her scholarship and insight. Since I understand that she has been assisting you in reading the proofs for Scripta Minoa II, which I imagine to be a rather exacting and important task, I should most willingly try to continue her work as best I can if you should want me to. I should certainly not have the exact acquaintance with the Knossos tablets and their particular problems that Miss Kober had, but I should like to carry on her contribution as far as possible. If I can be of assistance, please let me know. I have read with interest Mr. VentrisŐs mid-century report, and was generally pleased with your answer and all who answered the questionnaire conservatively. It seems to me that those who have worked with most material have fewer and sounder ideas to put forward, which is, I think, a hopeful sign. The article on fractional quantities I mentioned in my contribution will appear in the next number of the American Journal of Archaeology, and I shall send you an offprint as soon as I get them. I have not yet seen the proofs. The complete set of transcriptions from Pylos has also just gone to press and should appear soon. Sincerely Yours, Emmett L Bennett Jr
