And now, he's the chairman of an Indi an business school. Hanuman, the popular god known for his strength and val or, has been named official chair man of the recently opened Sard- ar Bhagat Singh College of Technol ogy and Management in northern India, an official said Saturday. The position comes with an in cense-filled office, a desk and a lap top computer. Four chairs w ill be placed facing the empty seat re served for the chairman and all vis itors must enter the office barefoot, said Vivek Kangdi, the school's vice chairman. "It is our belief that any job that has the blessings of Lord Hanu man is bound to be a success," said Kangdi. All Hindus know that Hanuman can lift mountains and leap oceans, but ancient texts make no mention of his business acumen. "When we were looking for a chairman for our institution, we scanned many big names in the field of technology and manage ment. Ultimately, we settled for Lord Hanuman, as none was big ger than him," Kangdi said. Hanuman is one of the most popular gods in the crowded pan theon of Hindu deities. His most famous feat, as described in the Hindu epic the Ramayana, was leading a monkey army to fight the demon King Ravana and rescue a kidnapped princess. The Sardar Bhagat Singh Col lege in Lucknow, the capital of Ut tar Pradesh, India's most populous state, awards bachelor's degrees in engineering and management. The school opened last year. Colorado police say they've caught the 'thong bandits' ARVADA, Colo. — Police in a Colorado town say they've caught two "thong bandits" who used women's underwear to disguise themselves during a convenience store robbery. Ninteen-year-old Joaquin Rico turned himself in Friday, two days after 24-year-old alleged accom plice Joseph R. Espinoza turned himself in. A surveillance video released last week by police in Arvada, Colo., shows two unarmed men inside the convenience store. They stole an undisclosed amount of cash and cigarettes in the May 16 robbery. One man wore a green thong and the other wore blue. Each thong barely covered the man's nose, mouth and chin and left the rest of his face exposed. One also wore a pink backpack in which he stuffed the stolen items. Compiled from Associated Press Reports — Katy Justice See video of RecSports'free preview week. Wire Editor: M onica Riese www.dailytexanonline.com WORLD BRIEFLY Red Cross: Myanmar dead may never be identified YANGON, Myanmar — Tens of thousands of people killed in last month's cyclone may never be identified because their bodies have decomposed so badly and many ended up far from home, an aid organization said Sunday. The task of burying an estimat ed 78,000 bodies has been over shadowed by efforts to assist Cy clone Nargis' 2.4 million sur vivors, many of whom are still without adequate food, water and shelter, the International Commit tee of the Red Cross said. "Many now are in advanced stages of decay, and the informa tion we have been able to gather is that many of the bodies that were affected by the tidal surges were stripped of clothing and any iden tifying items," said Craig Strath- em, a Red Cross spokesman. The Red Cross has received re ports that some bodies ended up more than four miles from their place of origin, he said. Venezuela's Chavez urges rebel group to end struggle CARACAS, Venezuela — Ven ezuelan President Hugo Chavez urged Colombian rebels on Sun day to lay down their weapons, unilaterally free dozens of hostag es and put an end to a decades- long armed struggle against Co lombia's government. Chavez sent the uncharacteris tically strong message to the lead ers of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, saying their ongoing efforts to overthrow Colombia's democrat ically elected government were unjustified. "The guerrilla war is history," said Chavez, speaking during his weekly television and radio pro gram, "Hello President." Remote-controlled bombs in Algiers train station kill 13 ALGIERS, Algeria — Two bombs in quick succession rocked a train station in Algeria on Sun day, killing 13 people, including a French engineer and Algerian firefighters and soldiers who re sponded to the first blast, a securi ty official said. The first bomb killed a French man working on a renovation project at the station in Beni Am- rane, about 60 miles east of the capital, the security official said. The second bomb hit minutes lat er, as security officials and rescue workers arrived at the scene. Both devices appeared to be remote- controlled. There was no immediate claim of responsibility. Algeria's al-Qai- da affiliate is known to be active in the area. The average price of regular gas crept up to $4 a gallon for the first time over the weekend, passing the once unthinkable milestone just in time for the peak summer travel season. Patrick Sison | Associated Press 25-year-old Tokyo man stabs 17, killing 7 Q U O T E O F T H E D AY Japan's low crime rate makes attack more surprising to citizens By Shino Yuasa The Associated Press TOKYO — A man plowed into sh op p ers w ith a truck Su n d ay and then stabbed 17 people with in m inutes, killing at least sev en of them in a grisly attack that shocked a country known for its low crime rate. The lunchtim e violence in the Akihabara district, a popular elec tronics and video game area, sent thousands of people fleeing. The assault, which occurred on the seventh anniversary of a mass stabbing at a Japanese school, was the latest in a series of knife at tacks that have stoked fears of ris ing violent crime in Japan. A 25-year-old m an, Tom ohiro Kato, was arrested with blood on his face. "The suspect told police that he came to Akihabara to kill people," said Jiro Akaogi, a spokesman for the Tokyo M etro p olitan Police Department. "H e said he was tired of life. He said he w as sick of everything," Akaogi said. The violence began w hen the m an crashed a rented, tw o-ton truck into pedestrians. He then jum ped out and began stabbing the people he had knocked down with the truck before turning on horrified onlookers, police said. Police confirm ed seven deaths — six men and one woman — but they could not say w hether the victims had died of injuries from the truck or from stabbings. Reports said the attacker grunt ed and roared as he slashed and s ta b b e d at S u n d a y s h o p p e rs crowding a street lined with huge stores packed with the latest in co m p u ters, ele ctro n ics, v id eo s and games. "H e w as scream ing as he was stabbing people at ran d o m ," a male witness told national broad caster NHK. Another witness told NHK that the suspect dropped his knife af ter police threatened to shoot him. Amateur video filmed by mobile phone show ed policem en over powering the bespectacled, blood ied suspect. The attack paralyzed the d is trict known as Electric Town and sent thousands of Sunday shop pers into a panic. A m ateur vid eo taken five m inutes after the rampage showed shoppers help ing victims and a man screaming, "Ambulance, Ambulance!" At least 17 ambulances rushed to the scene, and rescue workers feverishly tended to victims in the blood-pooled street. Japan boasts a low crim e rate compared to other industrialized nations and Tokyo, with a popula tion of 12.7 million, is considered relatively safe. In January, a 16-year-old boy at tacked five people in a shopping area, injuring two of them. In M a rch , o n e p e rso n w as stabbed to death and at least sev en others were hurt by a man who went on a slashing spree outside a shopping mall in eastern Japan. Knife attacks also have occurred in schools, the w orst on June 8, 2001 when a man with a history of mental illness burst into a school near Osaka killing eight children. By Adam Schreck The Associated Press NEW Y O RK — The average price of regular gas crept up to $4 a gallon for the first time over the weekend, passing the onee-un- thinkable milestone just in time for the peak travel season. Prices at the pump are expect ed to keep climbing, especially af ter last week's furious surge in oil prices, which neared $140 a barrel in a record-shattering rally Friday. W hile Am ericans who have to drive will feel the biggest squeeze, the increased prices also trans late into h ig h er costs for co n sum ers and businesses, who will be forced to shoulder increased costs for anything that needs to be transported. "I d on't think w e've felt quite the full im pact of $138 or $139 a barrel oil," said Jason Toews, co founder of fuel price research site GasBuddy.com. Gas prices rolled past their lat est threshold Sunday, increasing to $4.005 a gallon overnight from $3.988 the day before, according to AAA and the CHI Price Informa tion Service. O f course, drivers in many parts of the country have been paying well above that price fo r som e time. California has seen som e of the highest prices; a gallon there now averages $4.436 a gallon. M issou rians are paying the least at the pump, with a gallon selling for a relatively cheap $3.802 a gallon. Skyrocketing oil prices, which are trading at more than double their level last year, are largely to blame for the surge. Crude prices shot up more than 13 percent late last week in their biggest two-dav price gain in history. Benchm ark light, sw eet crude for July delivery officially finished the w eek at $138.54 on the New York Mercantile Exchange. "T h is could be a real w eight on the econom y," Jam es Cordi- er, p resid en t of L ib e rty Trad ing Group, said of oil's jump Fri day. "W ith every nickel that gas goes up, people are driving less and less."
