The third floor of the H ouse of 
Com m ons Co-op in West C am pus 
c a u g h t fire S atu rd ay aftern o o n , 
p ro m p tin g the indefinite reloca­
tion of all tenants.

A neglected hot glue gun caused 
the fire, A ustin Fire D ep artm en t 
investigators said.

T here w ere no reported inju­
ries, said AFD spokesman Lt. David 
Belknap. The co-op housed 27 resi­
dents.

Belknap said fire fighters received 
the call at 2:56 p.m. It took roughly

half an hour for 43 fire fighters from 
16 units to control the blaze. The fire 
w as heaviest in tw o rooms on the 
thia! floor of the house.

"Fire fighters m ade an internal 
attack. The fire extended into the 
attic, and fire fighters had to pull 
sheet rock," Belknap said. "But we 
were able to extinguish the fire."

The departm ent extinguished the 

flames at 4:19 p.m., Belknap said.

fire, residents w ere p rep arin g to 
hold a com petition w ith other co­
operative living houses.

The house's alarm system alert­
ed the d e p a rtm e n t of the blaze, 
and tenants m ade additional calls 
to the departm ent, helping the fire 
fighters realize the full extent of 
the fire, Belknap said.

"W e th o u g h t it w a s a false 
alarm ," said scociology junior Re­
becca Strong. "We all ran to the 
third floor w ith fire extinguishers, 
but it w as already too big for us."

Red Cross representatives were 
on the scene to help residents find

places to stay if they could not 
spend the night w ith friends.

Belknap said residents can expect 
fire damage on the third floor of the 
house and w ater and smoke dam ­
age in the rem ainder of the struc­
ture. D am age to the house totals 
$225,000, and residents lost $50,000 
in personal possessions, he said.

Ellen Kimble, another resident, 
said she saw sm oke com ing from 
under doors.

"Some of us ran back into our 
room s an d g ra b b e d o u r s h it," 
Kimble said. "We d o n 't even know 
if we can go back and stay."

Miller developed the program 
over the course of the fall sem es­
ter. The Texas Directory applica­
tion w as accepted by A pple and 
rele ase d on Dec 22. It is now 
available for $2.99 on the A pple 
store Web site.

Miller said the application took 
him three to four m onths to d e ­
velop betw een classes. H e p aid 
A pple a $99 fee' to become part of 
their developer's program , which 
allow s the developer to test their 
applications on their ow n and 99 
other iPhone devices.

the credit card fees and takes 30

Authorities noticing a shift toward aggression in homeless culture

less congregate and rest outside the Re­
naissance M arket on 23rd Street. This lo­
cation, am on g other West C a m p u s lo­
cales, attracts w hat the A ustin Police De­
p artm en t calls a "new b reed " of p a n ­
handlers that arrived in A ustin last sum ­
mer.

Their presence has prom pted officials 
to form ulate a plan to drive aggressive 
p anhan dlers aw ay from West C am pus, 
said officer Troy Schouest, an APD C en­

tral West district representative.

Solicitors have lived on the Drag since 
the 1960s and until recently have been 
relatively non-violent rem nants of the 
radical '60s y outh m ovem ent.But since 
the end of sum m er, that has changed, 
Schouest said.

"The group that we have now are from 
California, and they are not peaceful at 
all," Schouest said. "From my dealings 
w ith them , all they are about is av o id ­
ing all responsibility. They are the grun­
ge body left over from the '90s and the 
anarchists from the '70s. They are ru n ­
ning aw ay from themselves."

the new generation gives the hom eless 
along G uadalupe Street a bad name.

N in eteen -y ear-o ld Jerem y, an A u s­
tin tra n sie n t w ho refused to give his 
surnam e, said he d ro p p ed o u t of high 
school, started hopping trains at the age 
of 15 and cannot im agine sleeping any­
w here but a local park. H aving returned 
to A ustin for a couple of w eeks after 
trips to N evada and W isconsin, he has 
been to jail four times. If arrested again, 
he could face up to 180 days in jail, he 
said.

"I don't go to shelters. I refuse," Jeremy 
said. "I'd rather sleep outside. It's fun to be 
here, but it sucks. Austin is a trap."

Older generation of homeless uneasy with 'out of control' newcomers

For older homeless people living on the streets of 
Austin, the new group of transients on the Drag are 
nothing but trouble.

One hom eless man, w ho w ished to remain anon­
ym ous, said he tries to stay aw ay from the drifters 
as much as possible.

"You know those kids w ith those dogs?" he said. 
"They are all strung up on heroin. They are out of 
control."

The m an lives in a tent on a vacant lot along La­
m ar B oulevard, hidden in an outcrop of bam boo 
an d facing the Shoal C reek G reen Belt. To keep 
w arm , he has sleeping bags and a fire pit w here he 
cooks.

The m an said he enlisted in the arm y after g rad ­
uating high school in 1984. A native of N ew H am p­
shire, he fought in the First G ulf War. After killing

ensure that the area remains safe 
for students and area residents.

Student G overnm ent Presi­
dent Keshav Rajagopalan said 
stu d e n ts w ill p ick up trash, 
clean graffiti and be encouraged 
to report safety concerns. The 
first cleanup of West Cam pus 
will m ost likely take place the 
weekend before spring break.

"It's a way to get com m uni­
ty involvem ent," Rajagopalan 
said. "I think [safety] is an over­
all concern."

Schouest said the plan is de­
signed to centralize the location 
of transients along the Drag. The 
plan will feature shelter locations 
where homeless will have access 
to food, health care, shelter and 
resources to help regroup their 
lives. The plan will also restore 
West Cam pus' image by taking 
such actions as replacing bumt- 
out streetlights, Schouest said.

Mike Watson, regional m an­
ager for the Quarters residence 
halls, said he believes the plan 
will make West Campus safer.

"Students are insecure about 
th e ir liv in g ," W atson sa id . 
"These people are really under­
m ining what we are trying to 
establish here."

Watson said he rem em bers 
h av in g to rem ove tran sien ts 
from the staircases and garag­
es of his buildings during w in­
ter break. Transients were also 
rem oved from the abandoned 
M aryw ood build ing on West 
26th Street.

"They are in the parking ga­
rages trying to stay out of the 
cold, trying to solicit and sell 
d ru g s ," W atson said. "From 
what I've seen, they are more 
aggressive in their demanding. 
They are not afraid to confront."
Shouest said the new wave of 
panhandlers engages in aggres­
sive solicitation — defined as so­
licitation within 20 feet of a cross­
walk or ATM — public drug use 
and criminal trespassing.

This new crowd of is known 
to travel from city to city by 
train and stay in one location 
for months at a time. When one 
group leaves, another usually 
comes to replace it.

"T h at's a big issue, because 
when we get a group to under­
stand Austin's rules, they usu­
ally leave, so it's kind of like 
starting from scratch," Schouest 
said. "We try to get them on ev­
erything we can."

While Schouest said he is op­
tim istic about the plan, he ad­
mitted that the success of the 
program relies entirely on the 
willingness of the panhandlers 
to seek help.

For som e drifters present in 
the Renaissance Market, how ­
ever, visiting shelters is not an 
option. For KC, who declined 
to provide his full name, Austin 
is a stop on a journey that nev­
er ends.

"I was just traveling through 
to L o u isia n a ," KC, 21, said 
while caring for a small puppy 
in a bundle of clothes. "I was 
having fun. It's like a lifestyle 
choice. This is like a vacation. 
This is my spring break."

about 200 students and faculty 
gathered to play a traditional Chi­
nese game involving music and

clips from a four-hour New Year 
countdown show held in China 
every year.

"It is a big deal in China, and 
w e download it for all the stu­
dents w ho w ouldn't be able to 
watch it otherwise," says Wang.
Wang said UT has the larg­
est Chinese com m unity of any 
college in Texas. Many of these 
students com e to Texas direct­
ly from China without friends, 
family or assistance.

pick-up rides from the airport 
and helps students find hous­
ing, transportation and som e­
times lawyers.

"It feels very good and very 
safe to have people help you 
with all the little things. It helps 
them get over their nervo u s­
ness," Wang said. "I needed as­
sistance when I came to Texas. 
CSSA picked me up from the 
airport and helped me find an 
apartment."

Texas baseball coach Augie Garrido will plead guilty Monday to a charge of suspicion of drunken 

driving on Monday.

Garrido s lawyer confirmed Garrido will enter his plea at 10:30 a.m. in County Court-at-Law Judge 

Elisabeth Earle's courtroom. The coach was arrested Jan. 17 after an officer pulled him over in the 
downtown area.

Due to his arrest, Garrido has suspended by the University for four games. He was seen at the team's 

first official practice Sunday though.

I .arrido has spent his entire career teaching players to take responsibility for their mistakes, and he 

plans to follow his own advice, his attorney said.

"I made a serious mistake," Garrido said in a press conference on Jan. 23. "I drank alcohol. I got be­

hind the wheel of a car, and that's a bad decision — a real bad decision. I have violated, on my own 
with m\ decision, the mission of the University. I am solely responsible for that. This is not a reflection 
of the University."

Obama promises cuts, loans
WASHINGTON — Presi­
dent Barack Obama on Satur­
day promised to lower mortgage 
costs, offer job-creating loans for 
small businesses, get credit flow­
ing and rein in free-spending ex­
ecutives as he readies a new road 
map for spending billions from 
the second installment of the fi­
nancial rescue plan.

The White House is deciding 
how to structure the remaining 
half of the $700 billion that Con­
gress approved last year to save 
financial institutions and lend­
ers. An announcement was possi­
ble as early as this coming week 
on an approach that would use a 
range of tools to unfreeze credit, 
helping families and businesses.
At the end of a week that saw 
hundreds of thousands of people 
lose their jobs, Obama also used 
his Saturday radio and Internet 
address to tell that nation that 
"no one bill, no matter how com­
prehensive, can cure what ails 
our economy."

Obama close to tapping 
N.H. Republican for Cabinet
WASHINGTON — President 

Barack Obama appeared Sat­
urday to be leaning toward ap­
pointing a third Republican to 
his Cabinet, a move that would 
place the fiscally conservative 
Sen. Judd Gregg at the head of 
the Commerce Department even 
though a liberal Democrat was 
initially tapped for the post.

The appointment of the New 
Hampshire Republican — also 
could bring the Senate closer to 
the 60-vote majority Democrats 
need to thwart Republicans seek­
ing to filibuster legislation. How­
ever, there was no guarantee that 
New Hampshire's independent- 
minded governor would replace 
Gregg with a Democrat.

Republicans privately hoped 

Gregg would negotiate a deal 
that would allow the GOP keep 
the seat.

Republicans urge stimulus overhaul

Connell said Sunday the m as­
siv e stim u lu s bill backed by 
President Barack Obam a and 
congressional Democrats could 
go dow n to defeat if it's not 
stripped of unnecessary spend­
ing and focused more on hous­
ing issues and tax cut.

The Sen ate version of the 
bill, which topped out at near­
ly $900 billion, is headed to the 
floor for debate. The House bill 
totaled about $819 billion and 
earned no Republican votes,

even though it easily p assed 
the D e m o c ra tic -c o n tro lle d 
House. At some point lawmak­
ers will need to compromise on 
the competing versions.

McConnell and other Repub­
licans su ggested that the bill 
needed an overhaul because it 
doesn't pum p enough into the 
private sector through tax cuts 
and allows Democrats to go on 
a sp en d in g spree unlikely to 
jolt the economy. The Republi­
can leader also complained that 
Democrats had not been as bi­
partisan in writing the bill as 
Obama had said he wanted.

"I think it may be time ... for

the president to kind of get a 
hold of these Democrats in the 
Senate and the H o u se, who 
have rather significant majori­
ties, and shake them a little bit 
and say, 'Look, let's do this the 
right way,'" McConnell said. "I 
can't believe that the president 
isn 't em b arrassed ab ou t the 
products that have been pro­
duced so far."

For his part, Obam a said he 
is confident R epublicans will 
come around to support the fi­
nal version of the legislation.

The president repeated what 
his top aides and officials have 
been telling reporters in recent

d ay s, that the final p ack age 
would be close to its objectives 
— to save or create 3 to 4 mil­
lion jobs — and Republicans 
would be able to back it.

"I am confident that by the 
time we have the final package 
on the floor that we are going 
to see substantial support, and 
people are going to see this is 
a serious effort. It has no ear­
marks. We are going to be trim­
ming out things that are not rel­
evant to putting people back to 
work right now," Obama said.

However, he declined to pre­
dict how many Senate Republi­
cans might switch parties.

iraqis celebrate nonviolent, 
successful provincial elections

BAGHDAD — Passing 

through razor-wire cordons and 
police checkpoints, Iraqi voters 
Saturday took another step in the 
nation's quest for stability in pro­
vincial elections that were carried 
off without major violence but 
tarnished by claims of flaws and 
threats of challenges.

Even before a single ballot was 
counted, Iraqi officials were bask­
ing in the successes — watching 
millions of voters wave the pur­
ple-tinted fingers that have be­
come symbols of the country's 
hopes for a workable democracy.

President Barack Obama 

hailed the elections as significant, 
peaceful and important steps to­
ward Iraqis taking responsibility 
for their future.

But election observers and 
others were examining a grow­
ing list of complaints, including 
claims that hundreds of people 
— perhaps more — were wrong­
ly omitted from voting lists in ar­
eas across Iraq.

Despite delays, Colombian 
hostages are returned safely
BOGOTA — Four Colombian 
hostages delivered by leftist reb­
els to the International Red Cross 
have landed safely at a provin­
cial airport.

The three police officers and a 
soldier were met with hugs, ap­
plause and white daisies after 
stepping out of a Brazilian he­
licopter that touched down at 
the Villavicencio regional airport 
shortly after sunset on Sunday.

The policemen were seized in 
June 2007 at a roadblock, and the 
soldier was captured six months 
earlier during combat in south­
ern jungles.

On the airport tarmac, a journal­

ist who accompanied the mission 
complained that Colombia's mil­
itary tried to frustrate the release 
with two hours of overflights.

The government called the ac­

cusations baseless.

Just do it

When I came to U7 in 2 0 0 6 ,1 never in a billion blue moons 
thought I would becom e a cog in the University's machine of 
student leaders. On an average day, I was oblivious to campus 
events; on a well-informed day I would talk to representatives 
on the West Mall, but only if they were handing out fun-sized 
Snickers bars. Mostly, 1 subscribed to the mantra that I often 
hear com e from the mouths of my peers when I mention UT's 
Student Government: “That shit is so lame."

In those days, I was a caricature of the typical college student
— sleep-deprived, malnourished and more passionate about the 
evening lineup on the Food Network than campus issues. I was 
also perpetually broke, and that's what led me to work at The 
Daily Texan. I was seconds away from starting a career slinging 
hot wings at Plueker's when I came across a call for Texan col­
umnists on C raigslist, and when the paper offered me a whop­
ping $10 per week to w rite columns on topics of my choice, I 
seized the opportunity. I wrote about biking, drugs, dating and 
making out for the entire campus and my grandparents in Illi­
nois to read. When I got my first paycheck — meager as it was
— I was overcome by guilt: What I was doing was so self-indul­
gent and enjoyable, I would have done it for free. I realized that 
feeling was called loving your job, and I liked it.

When I ran out of personal things to write about, I started tak­
ing stock of what was around me for column fodder. There were 
a lot of things I hated about UT, and the Texan paid me to air my 
grievances in a civilized, well-researched manner. Once I start­
ed writing critically about things like registration and the now- 
defunct Bicycle Dismount Zone, notes of support from around 
cam pus began to trickle into my inbox. “Thanks for writing 
about this or that," they would say. “It's about time. I was think- 
ing the same thing.' And so the power of one became real, or at 
least recognized.

There was no turning back from there. The more I thought 
about UT, the more I becam e invested in it and delighted by 
how much there was to care about. UT is a thorny garden of is­
sues and idiosyncrasies, from the inflated tuition to the dearth 
of good coffee shops on campus to the statue of Jefferson Davis 
in front of the Tower. My stock in the paper engendered a genu­
ine concern for the school, and my preternatural teenage apathy 
waned in its presence. In short, I grew up and realized it wasn't 
bodies like Student Government that were lame. It was those 
who thought they were too good for it.

This is our community, and starting a habit of civic engage­
ment now can only bode well for the future of our habitually 
tuned-out nation. SG is one of the best places to begin the tra­
dition. SG has power, but its effectiveness is only as relevant as 
the people who are in it. Sweeping election reforms put in place 
by its current administration have made it easier for students to 
get involved. The organization has tightened its scope, and the 
upcoming elections are less about who can raise the most mon­
ey than who can run the most effective campaign. Bureaucracies 
are a fact of life. Gaining experience with them early on will bet­
ter equip you for the real world.

It's not hard to be a campus leader — last year, a handful of 
the races on the ballot went uncontested. Positions up for elec­
tion this year include not only SG president, vice president and 
individual college representatives, but seats on the boards of the 
Texas Student Union and Texas Student Media and the very po­
sition I occupy now. The filing deadline for this year's elections 
is Feb. 10. If you don't like something on campus, run for office 
and change it.

With the new year come opportunities to ensure that 2009 is your 
best, healthiest year yet. If you haven't already broken your New 
Year s Resolution, I've got a few suggestions you can work on.

Get tested for sexually transmitted infections. Even if you think 
your risk Ls low, there is real power in knowing for sure that you're 
S n-free. University Health Services offers testing and treatment for 
S 1 Is. 7 1 iu can also get tested for free at the Austin Travis County De- 
partment ot Health and Fluman Services STD clinic downtown by 
calling (512> 972-5580. The tests aren't scary, either — just a blood 
and urine sample.

Use condom s every time you have sex. Condom s are the only 
wa\ to reduce the risk of SI Is, and if you don't use them every time 
you have sex, your risk is high. You can get condoms for free in the 
Health Promotion Resource Center, Student Services Building 1.106, 
and buy a wide variety of condoms at the UHS Pharmacy.

If you're female, get an annual exam. UHS Women's Health Clinic 
has s< >me of the absolute best healthcare providers in town and they 
provide top-notch annual exams. The best part is that the basic exam 
(not including charges for a Pap smear or any STI tests) is just $20.

Have sex sober. Being drunk or high decreases inhibitions, but be­
ing under the influence makes it more likely that you'll have impres­
t s ted or nonconsensual sex. Alcohol is also one of the main causes 
of erectile dysfunction in college-age men, so staying sober adds a 
whole new reason to be a designated driver.

Since President Barack Obama restarted the conversation about 
volunteerism, there has been much discussion about what service 
means to Americans, and the idea of mobilizing an entire country for 
mass do-gooding momentarily made me feel all warm and fuzzy in­
side. I watched with admiration as Obama walked into a Washing­
ton, D.C., teen homeless center and rolled up his 
sleeves, but my heart dropped when I saw him 
pick up a roller and start painting.

Though I admit I don't volunteer often, part of 
me is very intrigued by the concept of altruism.
I'm one of those people who chokes up when 
she hears about random acts of kindness or those 
6-year-olds with leukemia who raise thousands of 
dollars for cancer research by setting up lemon­
ade stands outside local grocery stores. So in high 
school, when my heart started bleeding in ear­
nest, I joined a service club and started pitching 
in. I was thrilled when we did a project in Mexico, 
but by the end of the trip, part of my faith in vol­
unteering died.

The purpose of the trip was to paint a hospi­
tal that was falling into disrepair. However, when 
we got to the hospital, it looked very much like 
the one in my suburban hometown. In fact, it ap­
peared to have been painted recently. Nonethe­
less, we'd driven 10 hours, so we got to work.

el and watched the little white flurries fall to the floor. It was during 
this process that I realized, instead of brightening the place up, I was 
causing this Mexican hospital to fall further into disrepair.

I have attempted other service projects, but I've never escaped the 
nagging suspicion that none of the work I've done actually helped 
anyone. My fervor for service has died down as I've tried to make 
absolutely certain that whatever service work I did would not be a 
waste of my time, (and wouldn't have any harmful side effects).

A nice layer of paint can work wonders to brighten up a room, 
and I'm sure that Obama did nothing to harm the structural integ­
rity of the building, but every headline I read in ­
forms me of a new — and from the sounds of it, po­
tentially apocalyptic — crisis: climate change, the war 
in Gaza, soaring unemployment rates, malaria out­
breaks, food shortages, lack of clean water. With all 
these problems to be solved, it feels like Obama, my­
self and countless other well-meaning volunteers are 
simply painting over them.

We need a new definition of service that focuses on 
pinpointing real needs. Take some time to research 
the organization you want to help out. Ask about the 
services it provides and the w ay it uses its resourc­
es. Use the Better Business Bureau or charitynaviga- 
tor.org to identify an effective organization to get in­
volved with. Don't waste your precious time helping 
out worthless causes. And if you don't have enough 
time to spend actually volunteering but you can spare 
some cash, think about donating. Good organizations 
can't operate on blood, sweat and tears alone.

Everyone has skills and talents he or she can share 
with the world. As our knowledge of new, real prob­
lems broadens daily, we can see that addressing these 
needs will require much more than one day of service. It's important 
to continue to identify where help is really needed, because service is 
as much an attitude as an action.

Proving yourself at the polls

W hen the h ip p ies of the '60s w anted to voice their fru stra ­
tions, they w rote songs or chained them selves to buildings. O ur 
generation is m ore passive. We ju st vote. But that right to vote, 
that pillar of governm ental change that keeps even the m ost vi­
cious of ru lers in check, need s ju st as m uch p ro tectio n as our 
borders and our budget.

In 2007, a bill requ iring all p o ten tial voters to show a g o v ­
ernm ent-issued identification card w as brought to the floor of 
the Texas Legislature and w as dism issed after failing to garner 
a tw o-thirds m ajority vote. How ever, last week, Texas R epubli­
cans voted to exem pt the bill from the tw o-thirds rule, and with 
the current R epublican majority, it seem s set to pass in this ses­
sion.

But the p ro bab ility that R epublicans are going through this 
much effort because they are unbiased protectors of dem ocracy 
is low. M any accuse them of having another m otive: recent im ­
m igrants, the very poor and the elderly would be the least like­
ly to obtain governm ent-issu ed identification cards, and those 
groups happen to be the m ost likely to vote for D em ocrats.

I d o n 't d ou bt that the R ep u b lican s are looking to shore up 
their base w ith this legislation , but in the end, the b en efits of 
the bill outw eigh w hatever corrupt reasons there are behind fil­
ing it. In an age w here politics can bring people to blow s and 
where im m igration is such an im portant national security issue, 
one way to help docum ent citizens is w ith som e form of pho­
to ID. Voter identification cards, d riv er's licenses and passports 
are ways that people can docum ent their presence and legitim a­
cy. And if you can make it to polling stations, you can m ake it to

post offices, clerks of court, other sta te /co u n ty /to w n sh ip /m u 
nicipal offices or even a grow ing num ber of public libraries am 
public colleges and universities to obtain these docum ents.

Luis Figueroa, legislative staff attorney for the M exican Am ei 
ican Legal D efense and Educational Fund, recently told the Aus 
tin A m erican-Statesm an that “requiring a photo ID at the poll 
w ould affect the elderly, disabled and poor, creating unneces 
sary barriers to voting and violating a basic fundam ental right. 
But Figueroa exaggerates the possible consequences of this bil 
to code orange-like proportions. It's not like polling days sneal 
up on you. Inform ation about them is available to anyone whi 
w atches telev isio n , listen s to the rad io, reads a n ew spaper o 
even w alk s dow n the street. And w ith p rep aration , even thi 
poorest, oldest or new est A m ericans could pick up a photo ID

The financial cost of an ID is not a valid argum ent, eith er / 
d riv er's license costs $20. It costs as little as $8 to get a passport 
I he cost is so inconsequential that it would be worth it to safe 
guard who is and who is not able to vote.

You need a governm ent-issu ed photo ID to open a bank ac 
cou nt. You need a gov ern m en t-issu ed photo ID to buy med 
icine, to register for gov ern m en tal a ssistan ce, even to go to < 
non-em ergency room doctor. W ho does this law disenfranchise 
The only p eople that would be hurt by this leg islation in th< 
long run are illegal im m igrants and fraudulent voters, both o 
whom shou ld n 't be voting in the first place.

The right to vote is not a right for any person who lives in 
side the A m erican border. It is specifically granted to legal citi 
zens of any race, gender, religion or creed. The only people thi« 
b.ll would potentially hurt are those politicians that rely on ille­
gal im m igrants and fraudulent voting practices to further theii 
careers. Any resistance to a vo ter ID bill is not a noble stand 
against tyranny, it is a protection against those who wish to cir­
cum vent the law and w eaken a basic right we all hold dear

Perry open to proposed 
high-speed transit system

Growing populations, 
environmental concerns 
make project more likely

of a high-speed rail line in Texas' 
future. The project, experiencing 
a new push by backers, m ay still 
face difficulties.

and Transportation Corporation 
is leading the p u sh for the 200- 
m p h train , w h ich w o u ld sto p 
in Tem ple and A ustin. The rail 
w o u ld te rm in ate at airp o rts in 
D allas, H o u sto n , San A n to n io 
and Austin.

Spokesw om an for the gover­
nor A llison C astle told The A s­
sociated Press W ednesday th at 
P erry said he believes the rail 
"could very well be in the future 
of Texas."

Castle said the project w asn 't 
currently possible w ithout large 
g o v ern m e n t sub sidies b u t th a t 
as the p o p u la tio n increased in 
the Dallas-Houston-San A ntonio 
triangle, the rail w ould becom e 
more viable.

"O ur vision is to have an o p ­
era tin g high -sp eed rail system

in Texas by 2020," said Tem ple 
M ayor Bill Jones, vice chairm an 
of the nonprofit corporation.

The group sees the rail as a po­
tential solution to increased con­
gestion on Texas highw ays. The 
Texas D ata C e n te r a n d O ffice 
of the State D em ographer proj­
ects population could grow to as 
m uch as 40 million or 50 million 
by 2040.

Jones said the price tag for the 
rail itself w ould be betw een $12 
billion to $18 billion, w ith con­
struction starting around 2014 to 
2015. The price does not include 
local stops funded by com m uni­
ties along the way, he said.

The corporation hopes to get 
ab o u t $100 m illion in fu n d in g 
for right of w ay analysis, along 
w ith environm ental an d m arket 
studies.

"W e've got to get u n d erw ay 
w ithin the next couple of years," 
Jones said.

Elevating the rail w ou ld help 
avoid the issue of em in en t d o ­
m a in , he sa id . E m in e n t d o ­
m ain w as an issue in the devel­
o p m e n t of th e n ow can celled 
T ran s-T exas C o rrid o r, w h ic h 
w as renam ed and scaled dow n 
in January.

Jones also sa id he ex p e cted 
tra n s it-o rie n te d d e v e lo p m e n t 
to b u ild u p a r o u n d th e n ew 
stations.

"The econom ic d evelopm ent 
th at com es from a statio n like 
that is trem endous," he said.

"I think w e're revisiting this 
again because of energy and cli­
m ate concerns," said Kara Kock- 
elm an, an associate professor of 
civil, architectural and environ­
mental engineering.

K o ck e lm a n sa id th e h ig h ­
speed rail offered an efficient, 
g re e n e r a lte rn a tiv e to fly in g 
or d riv in g , "if only A m ericans 
w ould use it."

Kockelman added that if ener­
gy prices go up or there are more 
restrictions on travel because of 
clim ate, the rail w o u ld stan d a 
better chance at being com peti­
tive w ith air and road travel.

"But w ill you fill the seats is 
the big q u estio n ," K ockelm an 
said. "If people aren 't riding on 
it, the su b sid ie s becom e even 
worse."

jor Texas cities, w hich are built 
around cars that use spraw ling 
highw ay systems.

"Texas is p retty lo w -density 
developm ent," Kockelman said. 
"If you get into central Dallas or 
Forth W orth, people have to get 
a taxi once they get there or have 
to rent a car, and it w ould have 
been cheaper to drive in the first 
place."

banks disappear following a buy­
out from JPMorgan Chase & Co., 
but the bank's Guadalupe Street 
location will be spared and ren­
ovated to show its new Chase 
ownership.

of a relatively easy five-gam e stretch

turned into the m ost exciting and dis­
appointing of Texas' season.

K ansas S ta te guard D enis C le m ­
ente scored a Big 12-record-tying 44 
points to lead the W ildcats (14-7, 3-4 
Big 12) to an 85-81 overtim e win over 
the L on gh o rn s (15-5, 4-2) Satu rd ay 
at the Frank Erw in Center. The loss 
snapped No. 12 Texas' 19-game hom e 
winning streak.

coach Rick Barnes said. "B u t you re­

When your star guard is in the mid­
dle of a 44-point scoring explosion, it's 
hard not to let him call the plays.

With K ansas State and Texas tied 
with less than a m inute left in ov er­
tim e, D en is C le m e n te cam e to the 
hu dd le and told head coach Frank 
Martin the Longhorns would double­
team him if he was at the point guard 
spot. C lem ente suggested giving the 
ball to sixth m an Fred Brown for the 
shot. M artin listened.

"You know wrhen [Clemente's] on top 
of things when he's telling me what to

do," Martin said. "That's how connect­
ed we are as point guard and coach. ... 
He said, 'Let Fred have it.'"

Brown took advantage of a mismatch 
with Texas' Dam ion Jam es and nailed 
a 3-pointer that all but clinched an 85- 
81 upset victory over the No. 11 Long­
horns (15-5,4-2 Big 12).

The junior transfer from Miami may 
have given the spotlight to Brown at 
crunch time, but Clemente was the star 
of the show. His 44-point outing tied the 
single-gam e Big 12 scoring record set 
last season by another explosive Wild­
cat, Michael Beasley, and was the most 
points scored by a Kansas State guard 
since Askia Jones put up 62 in 1994.

And on a night when Slater Martin, 
the only Longhorn in the NBA Hall of

The L onghorns d id n 't w ant 
to lose a third-straight game to a 
conference rival. They dreamed 
of knocking off No.4 Baylor dur­
ing the 100-mile trek up to Waco.
Kat N ash's clutch free throws 
with 6.6 seconds left made that 
dream a reality as Texas topped 
Baylor 58-55.

After falling behind 11-0 in the 
first three minutes of the game, 
Baylor (17-3, 5-2 Big 12) weath­
ered No. 16 Texas' early storm 
with a 15-4 run to tie the game 
with just over six minutes remain­
ing in the first half. Texas missed 
19 of 24 shots over that span.

The Bears then closed the half 
on a 9-6 run, heading to the lock­
er room up 24-21 at intermission.
But Texas (15-5, 3-3) never 
panicked, keeping it close until 
literally the final second , g iv ­
ing them the victory.

" I am re a lly p rou d o f m y 
te a m ," Texas head coach G ail 
Goestenkors said. "W e have had 
som e rough games lately, and I 
lust talked to the team about the 
character, and when you hit ad­
versity, character reveals itself. I 
think we saw som e great char­
acter from ou r team today. It 
was a w ar, w’hich I think every 
game in the Big 12 is, and I was 
ju st proud of the way we bat­
tled from the tip. We w ill take it, 
hopefully gain some confidence

from it and move on and try to 
build upon it."

C o m in g o u t o f th e lo c k ­
er room, the Longhorns found 
themselves down six in the ear­
ly m inutes. But Texas' defense 
sh o w ed a p a s s io n it h a d n 't 
sh o w n in its p r e v io u s tw o 
gam es against O k lah o m a and 
Texas A&M, handing Baylor its 
second loss in as m any games.

"W hat I was surprised at was 
that we could never extend the 
lea d ," Baylor head coach Kim 
Mulkey said. "We would run the 
lead up to six or seven, then we 
would turn it over or let a girl get 
a basket. That is my disappoint­
m ent is that w e c a n 't extend 
leads when we have them ."

It is the first time Baylor has 
lost two consecutive home games 
since the 1999-2000 season. They 
lost to No. 2 Oklahoma at home 
earlier last week.

"It's big for so m any reasons 
for us," G oestenkors said. "The 
road has not been kind to us in 
general, so for us to get a win on 
the road is big. Then when you 
con sid er it w as here at Baylor 
where they have played so well 
and have so much pride, and it 
was a point in our season where 
we needed a big win, this really 
was a great win for us."

After the first race was over Fri­
day evening at the Texas w om ­
en's swim m ing and diving meet 
against No. 2 Arizona, it seemed 
like the competition was going to 
turn into a repeat of D ecem ber's 
Texas Invitational.

A rizo n a's 200-freesty le relay 
team — fe atu rin g sen io r L ara 
Jackson, the national-record hold­
er in the 50 freestyle — came out 
on top by nearly 1 second.

But the Texas w om en w eren't 
w illing to finish second to the 
Wildcats twice in one season.

Freshman Kathleen Hersey im­
m ediately responded to A rizo­
na's relay win by taking first place 
in the 400 individual medley. Her 
win was the first of 11 top finishes 
for Texas in the swimming events.
Texas also sw ept the 1- and 
3-m eter d iv ing events. Seniors 
Jessica Livingston and K athryn 
Kelly, both previous Big 12 Divers 
of the Week claimed the top plac­
es in the two events.

At the beginning of the second 
day of competition, the Longhorns 
led the Wildcats by a margin of 
107-77. After wining six individu­
al events on Saturday, Texas defeat­
ed Arizona by more than 20 points, 
with a final margin of 186.5-162.5.

The freshman class played an 
instrum ental role in secu ring a 
win against the defending nation­
al cham pions. H ersey took first 
place in six individual events and 
one relay event over the course of 
the two-day meet.

Freshman Karlee Bispo added 
three individual wins of her own, 
in ad dition to sw im m ing w ith 
Hersey on the first place 400 med­
ley-relay team.

Although the underclassm en 
were responsible for scoring most 
of the points, junior Susana Escobar 
contributed a decisive victory over 
in the 1650 freestyle. She beat her 
closest com petitor by more than 
10 seconds.

The meet was Texas' first race 
at home after coming off a three- 
meet road trip.

Texas faces SM U at hom e on 
Saturday. It will be the team's pen­
ultimate meet before traveling to 
Missouri at the end of the month
to compete in the Big 12 champi- 
onship meet.

No. 16 Texas drops matches to William & Mary, No. 19 Michigan

This weekend is one the wom ­
e n 's tennis team w ould like to 
forget.

The No. 16 Longhorns (1-2) suf­
fered through a rough weekend of 
upsets in Williamsburg, Va., drop­
ping matches to both No. 22 Wil­
liam & Mary and No. 19 Michigan

in the first round of the ITA Nation­
al Indoor Team Championships.

In the first team match Satur­
day morning between the Long­
horns and William & Mary Tribe, 
Texas took the doubles point af­
ter winning matches at No. 1 and 
No. 3 doubles but then lost four 
out of the six singles. Sarah Lan­
caster and Caroline Larsson were

the sole Longhorns to pick up sin­
gles victories in the 4-3 defeat. 
Carmen Pop clinched the victory 
for the Tribe after defeating UT's 
Maggie Mello 6-2, 6-4. In a battle 
of four ITA ranked players, it was 
the Tribe's No. 95 Katarina Zoricic 
and No. 79 Ragini Acharya who 
earned singles wins over Texas's 
No. 60 Vanja Corovic and No. 116

Krista Damico respectively. This 
was the first victory of the season 
for William & Mary.

Michigan lost in their first match 
on Saturday to North Carolina 5-2. 
In Sunday's third-place match be­
tween the No. 16 Longhorns and 
No. 19 Wolverines, the Wolverines 
came out firing and prevailed over 
the Longhorns 5-2. Lancaster and

Amanda Craddock won their re­
spective singles m atches for the 
Longhorns while Craddock and 
Larsson garnered a doubles victory.

No. 18 North Carolina defeat­
ed William & Mary 7-0 in the first 
place match. As winner of the tour­
nament, North Carolina will head 
to Madison, Wis. on Feb. 12-15 to 
participate in the 16-team ITA Na­
tional Indoor Team Championships 
Final. Texas will stay home.

No. 2 Texas advances to the ITA National In­
door Championships Feb. 13-16 in Chicago after 
knocking off TCU 4-1.

The Longhorns (4-0) won the doubles point 
and had singles victories from Dimitar Kutrovsky, 
Josh Zavala and Olivier Sajous.

Texas secured the doubles victor}' with an 8-3 

win at the third slot from Miguel Reyes Varela 
and Jon Wiegand.

"We're excited to have received a berth in the 

ITA National Team Indexers with this win, and 
TCU really made us earn it," UT coach Michael 
Center said. "Both teams show'ed a lot of tough­
ness and I'm happy our guys were able to stick 
it out and finish off the win. I give TCU a lot of 
credit. That's a team who will beat some very 
good college tennis teams this year. We've got 
some work to do to get better, but in the mean­
time, we're thrilled to go back to the ITA National 
Indoors for a third straight year."

The w in came after Texas' 4-0 victory over UC- 
Santa Barbara on Saturday in the opening round 
of the ITA Kickoff Weekend at Texas' Penick-Alli- 
son tennis center.

undefeated, fall to Arizona

The No. i Longhorns lost their 
first meet of the season to fourth- 
ra n k e d A rizo n a 204-149 th is 
weekend in Austin.

"It was a very funny meet. We 
got behind and stayed there," said 
Texas swim coach Eddie Reese. 
"We hadn't done that all year."

The H orns did not record a 
first-place finish until the sixth 
event when Olympian Ricky Be- 
rens won the 100-yard butterfly, 
touching the wall just in front of 
A rizona's Nicolas Oliveira and 
teammate Matt Donch.

Jean Basson battled back and forth 
until the last length w hen Jack­
son Wilcox turned on the jets and 
sailed past the two in front of him.
On the second day of the meet, 
Wilcox, Klueh and Basson had a 
similar race in the 1650 freestyle. 
Klueh took the lead to start the race, 
but like the 500, Wilcox was right 
behind. With five lengths to go,

Wilcox began to gain ground. But 
Klueh held onto his lead and won 
the race by his entire body's length. 
Basson once again finished third.

"We w anted to keep [Wilcox 
and Klueh] fresh. We didn't want 
to tire them out," Reese said. "We 
are just glad they finished first 
and second."

Though the m eet's outcom e 
w as not w h a t Texas w a n te d , 
there were some bright spots for 
the Longhorns.

"Brian Wilson and Matt Donch 
had a great meet. Both had sea­
sonal bests," Reese said, "The 
divers were all good."

The H orns look to rebound 
when rival Texas A&M comes to 
Austin on Friday.

m inutes but rallied from dow n 
7-1 to hold a 17-16 lead w ith 7 
m inutes 15 seconds remaining.

as led as the Wildcats w ent on 
a 16-0 run to carry them to a 
32-22 halftime lead.

Texas m ade just eight of 25 
shots and com m itted 13 tu rn ­
overs in the first half.

given that they lost four sta rt­
e rs from la st y e a r 's NCA A

national player of the year Mi­
chael Beasley.

"We d o n 't have a God-given 
right to think we can just show 
up and win basketball gam es," 
Barnes said. "For us to come in 
and be surprised by som ebody 
playing hard, th at's really u n ­

acceptable. That's toughness."

T he L o n g h o rn s r e b o u n d ­
ed in the second half, shooting 
53.3 percent, but Clemente shot 
even better.

The M iam i tra n s fe r, w h o 
sat o u t last year, had scored 
a m od est eig h t p o in ts in the 
first half and d id n 't attem pt a 
3-pointer.

That w ould change in a big 

way.

A fter scoring the last four 
points for K ansas State in the 
first half, Clem ente w ent on to 
score another 17 straight points 
to open the second, including 
five consecutive 3-pointers.

"It seem ed like an ocean in 

that rim," Clemente said.

C lem ente finished a perfect 
6-for-6 from behind the arc and 
made all 12 of his free-throw at­
tempts.

The W ildcats m ain tained a 
double-digit lead for alm ost 15 
minutes. A round that time, the 
momentum began to shift.

Abrams hit a 3-pointer w ith 
six m in u te s left to m ake it 
63-51. Then, after Kansas State

missed two second-chance op ­
portunities on its end, Abrams 
m ade a layup and drew a foul 
to electrify a quiet crowd.

Two plays later, James threw 
d o w n a d u n k before M ason 
stole the ball from C lem ente 
and gave it to Ward to finish 
w ith another dunk.

Trailing by five w ith three 
m inutes rem aining, the Long­
horns went on a 10-5 run, final­
ly tying the game with nine sec­
onds left and forcing overtime.

"You know Texas is going to 
m ake a ru n ," M artin said. "I 
knew they were coming."

ball over 20 times for the game 
and had 29 personal fouls, their 
m ost all season. The W ildcats 
had 16 tu rn overs and 28 p e r­
sonal fouls.

D e sp ite th e p o o r p e r f o r ­
m ance and his te a m 's lack of 
consistency, Barnes isn 't p u sh ­
ing the panic button yet.

"I realize how close we are. 
I do realize that we took a big 
hit today," Barnes said. "We are 
w hat we are right now."

both the most points scored 
at the Erwin Center and the 
most against Texas.

"It seemed like an ocean in 

that rim," Clemente said.

Though Kansas State went 
up early in the gam e, the 
W ildcats needed Clem ente 
to score in order to hold off a 
surging Texas squad. During 
an eight-m inute stretch that 
b rid g ed the first and sec­
ond half, Clemente scored 21 
straight Kansas State points, 
including four straight pos­
sessio n s w h ere he nailed 
four 3-pointers.

Kansas State began to strug­
gle with about eight minutes 
to go in regulation. With Tex­
as closing the lead, Clemente 
again took over, rattling off 15 
straight points for the Wildcats.
"H e's taken this team by 
the horns —no pun intend­
ed —and just led us," M ar­
tin said. "Especially after the 
tough times, his personality 
has taken over our team."

Texas matched up different 
players on Clemente in an at­
tem pt to slow him down, but 
his speed proved too much. 
A ccording to C lem ente, it 
took a toll on Justin Mason 
in particular.

"He came to me and said, 
'I'm really tired, man. You're 
p ushing the ball too fa st/" 
Clem ente said of Mason. "I 
started laughing."

Mason said he d id n 't re­
member the exchange, but Cle­
mente's speed was definitely a 
factor for the Longhorns. Texas 
head coach Rick Barnes talk­
ed about Clemente before the 
game, saying he is among the 
fastest in the conference.

"I used my speed [to get 
op e n ]," C lem ente said. "I 
th in k I'm faster than a n y ­
body. That's how I feel."

Anderson, Hooker 
push Big 12 over SEC

C om peting alongside Texas A&M and 
Missouri, the Longhorns m ade a case that 
the Big 12 Conference has more talent than 
the SEC-at least in m en's track.

N inth-ranked Texas posted five NCAA 
provisional marks and w on three events at 
the Big 12 vs. SEC Show dow n at the Gil­
liam Indoor Track & Field Stadium in Col­
lege Station on Saturday, leading the Big 12 
to a 332-279 victory over SEC teams Florida, 
LSU and Mississippi.

"We had som e guys im prove on their 
perform ances from last w eekend, and we 
saw some guys get taken out of their com­
fort zone, which forced them to perform in 
a different situation than they're used to," 
said head coach Bubba Thornton.

The Longhorns sw ept the 800-meter for 
the second-straight week, doing so without 
defending outdoor National Champion Ja­
cob Hernandez, who took the weekend off. 
Finishing first with a personal indoor best 
time of 1 minute, 49.18 seconds, Senior Tevan 
Everett led the pack. Senior Mike Carmody 
finished second at 1:49.88, and junior Tevas 
Everett placed third at 1:50.20. All three post­
ed provisional marks, which could lead to a 
spot at the NCAA National Championship.

Senior high jum per Raymond Harris also 
posted a provisional mark with his personal 
best jump of 2.2 meters, almost 7 feet 3 inch­
es, a foot taller than Harris. Harris dominated 
the field and was the only competitor to clear 
2.05 meters, his opening height. Sophomore 
pole vaulter Maston Wallace cleared a height 
of 5.20 meters (just over 17 feet), which was 
good enough to win the event. Fellow soph­
omore Danzell Fortson placed second in the 
400 meters with a time of 0:47.93.

Several freshmen improved their perfor­
mances from last w eek's meet. In the shot 
put, Jacob Thormaehlen added nearly three 
feet to his mark, placing third with a throw 
of 16.71 meters. Long jum per Doug Mop- 
pert added more than a foot to his jump, also 
placing third with a 7.39 meters leap.

For the most part, coach Thornton was 
pleased with his team's efforts. The Longhorns 
will travel to the Big Apple to compete in the 
New Balance Collegiate Invitational, held this 
Friday and Saturday in New York.

"In some cases, the guys stepped up and in 
some cases, we saw where we need to be put­
ting in some more work. The most important 
thing right now is that we keep improving. 
We need to reviews w hat we've done these 
first two weeks, see what we need to fix and 
get it taken care of," Thornton said.

Longhorns sweep 800, help Big 12 take down SEC

Saturday was another big day 
for the Texas w o m en 's track 
team as it helped lead the Big 12 
to a 359-226 victory over the SEC 
in the Texas A&M Showdown in 
College Station.

Senior sprinter Alex Anderson 
came home with her second first- 
place medal of the season in the 
60-meter dash with a season-best 
time of 7.33 seconds. She also 
earned a third-place finish in her 
first 200-meter race of the season 
with a 23.68-second time.

"I think Alex is doing a great 
job," said head coach Beverly 
Kearney. "I'm confident in her 
and in w hat she needs to do to 
get where she wants to be."

The Big 12 also got some help 
from the nation's top high jum p­
er, Texas junior Destinee Hook­
er, who ended the day with her 
second first-place finish in as 
many meets, clearing 5 feet 11 
1/4 inches.

with two second-place finishes. 
Brown tossed 52 feet 8 3 /4 inch­
es in the shotput and threw a ca­
reer-best 60 feet 10 1/4 inches in 
the weight throw.

The Longhorns also saw top- 
three finishes from junior dis­
tance runner Asia Myrland and 
freshman hurdler Ashley Starks. 
M yrland's season-best perfor­
m ance in the 5,000-meter run 
earned her third place.

Starks also earned a third- 
place medal in the 60-meter hur­
dles. Her time of 8.76 is nearly a 
full second better than her first

meet of the season on Jan. 16.

Even w ith the team 's three 
first-place finishes and 10 top- 
th re e fin ish e s, th e a th le te s 
aren't satisfied.

"We have a lot of work to do. 
Not work to do on the track, but 
putting w hat we practice into 
competition. It's going to be a 
challenge for us, but I'm con­
fident in w hat we are doing to 
help us get w here we w ant to 
be," Kearny said.

Texas' next meet will be the 
Houston A ll-Com er's Meet on

and 10 rebounds for the Bears

in a pair of red wings on Saturday, I caught 
glimpses of feathers and flashes of sequins 
peeking out from under the coats of people 
waiting to get in. I'd been to Carnaval a couple 
years before and had been wondering if it was 
really as crazy as I remembered.

Through cultural lens, Slumdog’

an exercise in Western stereotypes

Few film s in recent m em ory 
have captured global audiences 
in the manner that "Slumdog Mil­
lionaire" has. "Slum dog" was re­
leased nationw ide in the United 
States just weeks after the Novem­
ber terrorist attacks in Mumbai.

The feel-good story resonated 
with m illions around the world, 
and for many, w atching the film 
in th eaters b ecam e a m eans of 
c h a n n e lin g sy m p a th y fo r In ­
d ian s, learn in g about a people 
they oth erw ise knew relatively 
little about.

But w h at w e do not know 
enough about, we risk exoticiz- 
ing. 1 should know: For as long

as I can remember, 1 carried in my 
mind impressions and images of 
the United States. I grew up in the 
Bombay of the late 1980s and 1990s 
— a time of great social upheaval, 
the place a porthole offering es­
cape to the West. 1 was raised on a 
diet of mainstream 1 lollywood cin­
ema and black-and-white art mov­
ies. My large family was middle- 
class but ambitious. At least three 
cousins arrived from different cit­
ies and stayed with us while pre­
paring their applications for grad­
uate schools in the United States 

I would sniff at the old National 
G eographic m agazines that thev 
brought back for me during va­
ca tioas and imagine I could smell 
America in the scented paper.

Identity is about fitting expe­
riences into com fortable stereo­
types. In the W estern gaze, the 
old stereotypes about India — an 
exotic land of elephants, yoga and 
sn ak e-ch arm ers, best captu red 
in N ational G eog rap h ic p h o to ­
g rap h s — have m ade w ay for 
more nuanced observ ations. Sup­
posedly Indians shake their heads 
horn side to side and "speak fun­
ny" in lilting, affected tones; we 
don't groom ourselves properly; 
we are usuallv employed by ou t­
sourcing firms; we are often so­
cially aw kw ard. And of cou rse 
you cannot ignore the behem oth 
that is Bollywood.

Step back in time 
at the Long Center 
for captivating story

E ntering the opera is like 
blasting back to the 19th centu­
ry courts of Italy. After your trip, 
when you step out into the hustle 
and bustle of a 21st-century city, 
vou understand w hy the genre 
is not dead. It's more alive than 
ever, telling the same stories you 
tell — only better.

The Austin Lyric Opera pre­
sented Giuseppe Verdi's "Rigo- 
letto" to a pack of A ustinites 
flashing their coolest threads Sat­
urday at the Long Center for the 
Perfoming Arts. Ever heard of 
"La Donna e Mobile"? The song 
— or aria, as they're known — 
has been popularized by count­
less renditions in movies, record­
ings, YouTube videos and Flash 
animations.

Rigoletto, played by baritone 
Todd Thomas, is a jester despised 
by the members of the court of 
the Duke of Mantua, interpret­
ed by tenor Chad Shelton. No 
one likes a mocker, and though 
he's there to make fun, he's actu­
ally the one being made fun of. 
But he doesn't give up w ithout 
a fight.

When Rigoletto mocks Count 
Monterone, played by bass bari­
tone Kyle Albertson, the count 
places a thunderous curse on him. 
Afraid of what may become of 
him, the jester flees to find solace 
in his daughter Gil da, played by 
soprano Lyubov Petrova. She is 
his life and joy, and he bottles her 
up like a bird in a cage so that no 
one may reach her. Together they 
lament the curse, disarming the 
audience with precise pitches and 
pure, high notes. While Rigoletto 
belts out sounds like frantic rain, 
Gilda's voice rolls like calm water.
Much to Rigoletto's dismay, 
the duke slips into his house 
when no one is looking. When 
Rigoletto leaves, the duke ap­
pears and sweeps Gilda off her

feet. In an opera, it makes sense 
for two characters who have just 
met to fall in love in the span of 
one song. Verdi's hum or is in­
grained in songs like the love­
birds' duet, "Adio," w hen they 
refuse to part.

Gilda is a beautiful flower who 
displays a uniform color across 
songs. Her high notes make the 
audience feel it is landing on a 
bed of feathers. She's a healthy, 
full-bodied singer with an excel­
lent command of her high regis­
ter and truthfulness in her inter­
pretation. Once she starts, you 
w on't want her to stop. Her heart 
speaks through her voice.

Things turn red w hen Rigo- 
let to discovers the duke. He 
commissions Sparafucile (Peter 
Volpe) to kill the duke and hand 
over his body in a bag. In a twist 
of events, Rigoletto thinks he's at 
the height of his glory, holding 
the body of the duke in a sack, 
failing to see that his daughter is 
actually inside.

"La Donna e M obile" then 
comes into play, serving as a key 
unlocking the farce of Rigoletto's 
mistake. He hears the duke sing­
ing and recognizes him, opening 
the sack to realize that the count's 
curse has come true.

But things couldn't end here. 
In a heartbreaking scene, Gil­
da wakes up on her deathbed, 
lam enting her mistakes w ith a 
voice as sweet as a prayer. The 
viewer's excites in the delight of 
the hum an voice in its supreme 
perfection.

G ood stories are c a p tiv a t­
ing, no matter how they're told. 
But it's the way they're told that 
makes them timeless.

the scandalous outfits lurking

memories were affirmed.

For me, a sta n d o u t of this 
y ear's Carnaval was the nu m ­
ber and variety of boobies on 
display. So many boobies. Old 
ones in leather slings, young 
ones with gold pasties covering 
the nipples and even a pair with 
a cartoon stick of butter painted 
on them. Buttery nipple, get it?

A ustin's Carnaval Brasileiro 
has been a wild party since its in­
ception in 1975. Originally started 
by Brazilian scholarship students 
who missed the big party in their 
home country, Carnaval has de­

veloped into a treasured annual 
dance party for Austinites.

Crazy costumes, intense danc­
ing and pounding Brazilian beats 
combine for a night many revelers 
have made an annual tradition.

Mike Quinn, who has put on 
the show for more than 30 years, 
said he doesn't tinker with the 
formula too much because "folks 
seem to like it the way it is."

Carnaval was even held once 
in the legendary, and now ex­
tinct, A rm adillo World H ead­
quarters, attesting to the longev­
ity of what some would call Aus­
tin's best party.

Joe, an attendee from Dallas, 
said Carnaval is his favorite Aus­
tin event because, unlike many 
festivals elsewhere, diversity —

gay and straight — is abundant.
"It's more human," he said.
One look at the dance floor, 
and I had to agree with Joe. In the 
center of the throng, transsexu­
als mingled with straight Brazil­
ian men, girls with belly dancing

tribute to the pulsing drumbeat, 
and young and old worked up a 
sweat side by side.

The one reason friends I knew 
didn't go to Carnaval this week­
end was the steep entry fee. Thir­
ty-five dollars is a lot to spend on 
one night, and once you got in, 
the drinks were $6 a pop. But the 
diversity of attendees and cos­
tumes make Carnaval an Austin 
tradition to experience at least 
once in your life.

And taking a sip of my drink, 
I can't help but think that Car­
naval Brasileiro is surely helping 
to keep Austin weird.

MOVIE: Despite attention, Slumdog’ 
a fairly standard Bollywood flick

to stereotypes. Partly out of the 
need to fashion a relatively sim­
ple narrative that a global audi­
ence could follow, "Slum dog" 
picks the most obvious among 
these stereotypes and peddles 
them to the world, verisimilitude 
and authenticity be damned. As 
one columnist wrote in the Times 
of London, "There was always

the risk that 'Slumdog' would be 
seen by some as merely tourist 
pom — something grim but up­
lifting, with amazing cinematog­
raphy and beautiful colours."

The movie has done much for 
India but far too much for direc­
tor Danny Boyle's career. It does 
not possess the art or the em o­
tional gravitas of, say, "Little 
Miss Sunshine." W hat was the 
academy thinking when it hand­
ed "Slumdog" a nomination for

Best Picture over "WALL-E" or 
"The Dark Knight"?

What we have here is a d e­
cent film passing off as inven­
tive, only distin guished from 
the standard Bollywood flick by 
its extraordinarily sophisticated 
camera work and quirky inter­
national cast.

Boyle picked Anil Kapoor, a 
well-known Indian star, to play 
the quiz show host. The children 
in the film's first quarter were cast 
perfectly and turned in brilliant, 
believable performances. Mom 
incongruously, however, Boyle 
chose a British-Asian with a 
whiff of elitism about him for 
the eponymous role. Dev Pa­
tel speaks Indian English with 
a poorly disguised upper-class 
British accent throughout the 
film. Imagine Matthew McCo- 
naughey draw ling in a Brit­
ish period drama. Would such 
details not bother a global 
audience?

"Slumdog" is a classic case 
of taking som ething from a 
distant foreign place, reshap­
ing the narrative to fit local 
tastes and aggressively circu­
lating it among one's own as 
the cultural artifact du jour. 
Until the 1960s, developing 
states were mostly the ones 
doing the borrowing and re­
shaping from countries like 
the United States. But India's 
emergence in the 1990s as a re­
vitalized economy has made it 
an interesting subject of analy­
sis for the Western world.

If you loved "Slum dog," 
you would derive greater plea­
sure from "Company," a bril­
liant m ainstream Bollywood 
film (though that sounds like 
an oxymoron) on the mafia. 
"Black Friday," a film about the 
1992 Bombay riots, will blow 
you away. And while the music 
of "Slumdog" might appear to 
have that ram seal of freshness, 
do hunt for A.R. Rahm an's 
compositions from "Bombay" 
and "Taal" on YouTube.

Slumdog's producers were 
cripplingly conscious of the 
markets they were targeting. 
Under the circumstances, the 
film feels not so m uch half- 
baked as contrived.

UT alumna’s novel 
explores global 
Warming run amok

U T alumna Perla Sarabia 
Johnson's debut book, "Global 
. Warning," brings environmen-
• . tal passion to yet another level.
• ; The novel takes place in the 
, * first half of the 21st century 
•. and features a young male pro-
• i Agonist named Dustin Jones 
v who must cope with the conse- 
’* * quences of severe global warm- 
G ing. Plants and animals have
“ reached almost unfathomable 
!' * sizes. Temperatures never dip 
" . below triple digits. The food
• ' market is saturated by a flood of
artificial substitutes. Dairy prod­
ucts are nowhere to be seen.

Yet "G lobal" is not a com­
pletely abstract, free-floating 
sci-fi novel. Johnson's journal­
ism training in newspaper, TV 
and radio aided her thorough 
research. She consulted many 
experts, from a horticulture pro­
fessor at Texas A& M Universi­
ty to a member of the American 
Society of C ivil Engineers to a 
curator at the Smithsonian.

Johnson said the most sur­
prising thing she learned while
■ researching for her book was 
that her "w ild" ideas were often 
plausible.

The "Dallas Down Under" 
that Dustin designs in the book?
' . Possible. Johnson's ideas on fu­
turistic agriculture? Also pos­
sible. W hile the likelihood of
■ these events occurring is slim, 
she said, the idea of at least mi­
nor probability made her "sur­
prised and pleased."

Johnson also weaves discus- 
l . sions of racial identity into her

novel. As a child of two Cuban 
parents, Johnson is passionate 
about her culture and is not shy 
to address it in her work, even 
through such insidiously silent 
topics as Latino racism.

"W ith hurt feelings [Moth­
er] said, 'I'm not Mexican; my 
parents are from Cuba/" John­
son writes in the book. "Prob­
lem was a lot of Texan kids with 
ignorant parents thought any­
one with brown skin was 'Mex­
ican' not knowing or caring that 
there are other Spanish-speak­
ing countries."

Johnson also believes that 
while her book is categorized 
as science fiction, it has genre- 
crossing appeal, with elements 
of a murder mystery, a romance 
and a suspense novel.

The book itself, while excit­
ing and readable, suffers from 
mild literary gaffes, such as ty­
pographical errors, that hinder 
the work.

Johnson likes to remain in­
dependent and self-sustaining. 
Without an agent, she did the 
marketing for her book herself, 
but a good editor could have 
caught these flaws and helped 
Johnson achieve a tighter, more 
cohesive story with richer char­
acters that didn't sacrifice any of 
Johnson's own ideas and fervor.
When asked about her favorite 
line in the book, Johnson said it 
came in her acknowledgements: 
"A world without imagination 
is a world without hope."

In "Global W arning" John­
son has stayed true to her own 
creed and created a chaotic, fan­
tasy world full of imagination. 
Through it one can clearly see 
her hopes for the role Texas (and, 
possibly, humanity) can play in 
environmental consciousness.

"Global Warning" is available 
in Austin at BookPeople and 
at the Barnes & Noble at the 
Arboretum.

Symphony with a youthful twist helps reopen Bass Concert Hall

did not seem appropriate for the en­
trance to a sym phony production.

Friday's "W orld of S o u n d " w el­
com ed the B ass Concert H all's re­
opening after a brief interm ission 
du e to rem odeling.

A u stin 's electro-iunk-rock d u o 
G h o stla n d O b se r v a to r y w a s a 
p art o f the concert, so the u se of 
the special effects seem ed a p p ro ­
priate. O ne thing w a s for certain: 
This new tw ist on orchestral m u ­
sic barely resem bles a third-grade 
field trip to the symphony.

Robert Cam ochan, director of the 
Longhorn Band, described "World 
o f Sou n d " as a "scope of styles."

"Eclectic is an understatem ent," 

he said.

The freshness an d youthful in­
fusion w as eviden t in the p erfor­
m ance and crow d a s the stu den t 
p erform ers began stom p in g their 
feet with anticipation while the au ­
dience whistled and clapped wait­
ing for the conductor to appear.

a cherry vodka sour in the other.

NBC sells a record $206M 

in ads fo r Super Bowl

TAMPA, Fla. — NBC said on 
the eve of Sunday's Super Bowl 
that it has sold the last two of 
the 69 advertising spots for the 
gam e, pushing total ad revenue 
for the event to a record 
$206 million.

The network said its total of 
$261 million in ad revenue for all 
of Super Bowl day also is a re­
cord, calling it an especially im­
pressive feat in the middle of the 
economy's steep downturn.

The Super Bowl is the premier 

advertising event with an U.S. 
audience of 100 million viewers, 
many of whom watch closely 
during gam e breaks for the de­
but of entertaining, big-budget 
commercials.

The ads have sold for between 

$2.4 million and $3 million per

30-second slot this year.

"These advertising milestones 

show the power of the NFL 
brand and the strength of the 
Super Bowl as a TV property in 
this economic climate," said Jeff 
Zucker, president and CEO of 
NBC Universal, a unit of Gener­
al Electric Co.

"The Super Bowl has become 
one of our country's biggest hol­
idays, a uniquely American day, 
and advertisers recognized the 
value in being a part of it."

Thirty-two advertisers in all 

will showcase' their products 
during Super Bowl coverage. A 
30-second Super Bowl spot is 
about 20 times more expensive 
than the average commercial 
time on prime time network pro­
gram s this time of year, accord­
ing to TNS Media

NBC said the ads featured 
during the game also will be 
available for viewing almost im­
mediately after they air at Web 
sites including NBC.com, Hulu. 
com and Superbowl.com.
