Stiver Frames Among the Gold A dd 'Class to New Eye-wear B y SAMMY NIXON Glasses, which used to be rather staid, conservative objects to cor rect faulty vision, have now be come mad, gay things. People have been so busy keeping an eye on the new skirt lengths they have had little time to observe the dras tic change in eye-wear. Gold, silver and rhinestones, colorful plaids, black and amber, pink, red, blue, and green are only a few of the types of frames seen around the campus. Dorothy Hedberg, junior psy chology student from Fort Worth, has a pair with wide sterling sil ver frames for dressy occasions. For school, she wears a pair with wide clamps and amber spotted with gold studs. frames Barbara Hollan, senior from Kerrville, and Helen Crone, from Fort Stockton, have glasses with shiny, gold plated that clamp over the ears. frames The long, expensive arm of fashion has reached out this time to include men as well as women their in the change. However, taste rung to the more conserva tive styles of horn rims and black frames. Jack Allis, graduate jour nalism student from Nacogdoches, has a pair he calls “strictly utili ty,” with frames a quarter of an inch thick. Marc B. Smith, law student from Fort Worth, uses glasses with a plain black horn rim. Carey Bradford, senior from El Paso, wears a pair with thick am ber rims and clamps half an inch wide. These are only a few, and by no means the most startling, of the styles currently being worn. Peer out from behind your own multi colored frames and see what we mean. What, these old things? We’ve had them simply months! you’ll Daughter Is Born to Yodors A daughter, Karen Elise, was born ai Mr. and Mrs. James R. The young soloist will play the Tschaikowsky Piano Concerto No. I in B-flat Minor and the orches tra, directed by Hendrick J. Buy- tendorp, will be heard in Beetho ven’s First Symphony, the Prelude to Lohengrin, Festmarsch by Rich ard Strauss, and the Raymond Overture by Thomas. Advance sales indicate a large opening night audience, but tick ets may still be obtained at J. R. Reed Music Company, William Charles Music Company, and King’s Record Shop. Mr. Janis discovered his talent through an impromptu kindergar ten solo on a xylophone, which had been given him on his fifth birthday. toy The tousled-haired youngster loved the toy so th a t he took it to school with him, and when the teacher began playing fo r the singing hour the tem ptation was too much. A fter a series o f simple duets, the th a t teacher was convinced the child had g re a t talen t and a l most as soon as his parents heard, taking music young Byron was lessons. When he was only 9, he gave his debut recital in Pittsburgh. Mr. Janis is now on his second season of coast-to-coast concert tours and critics the nation over have been favorable in their re ports of the bright young musi cian’s work. He is the star of his own NBC radio program and has been solo ist m any times with the NBC Sym phony Orchestra under the baton of Dr. Frank Black. To his full repertoire of concert the piajio music, Mr. Janis adds m astery of eleven m ajor concerti: Bach, D Minor; Beethoven, Nos. Contest Is Open To Composers A contest fo r the $250 Harold J. Abrams Memorial Award is now open to composers who have been residents of Texas fo r a t least one year. The entry deadline is Novem ber I. Scores should be mailed or delivered to the Dallas Symphony Orchestra Inc., F air Park Audi torium, Dallas, IO.
