And as each day brings new notices of Nazi routs or J apa ne se “ strategic w it h d ra w als,” University students, like people all over the country, are reading the first page of the ne w spaper before turning to the sports section and they are paying more attention to news broadcasts than ever before. The larger the headlines, the more the re aders become interested in wh at is going on about them. In weeks follow ing December 7, 1941, papers were read and re-read and then read some more. But as the days lagged into weeks and the weeks into months— months of wait ing for the “ easy victory” th a t was cer tain to come— people began to take the w a r for granted and settled back in the ir usual pace. Tha t is, we people back home. For almost three years and a half Yank forces have fought and slowly gained the up per hand. Outside of a few comparatively miraculous feats, the w a r has progressed slowly with steady gains which seem to creep up until it adds to the final victory. And unless the headlines scream about the biggest air raid or swiftest advance to date, we thum b over to the society page or comic strips to see how many spies the Sparrow’ has captur ed in his latest hair-raising escapade. But now it looks as if V-Dav is not as unreal as it seemed even a month ago. The air is packed with rumors of peace coming fro mthe Germans, predictions as to how long the enemies can hold out. Everyone is elated over the latest devel opment— and they know w'hat the latest developments are. And it is right tha t we all know’ where our armies are and what they are doing. It is important hta t we know’ the politi cal and economical set-up of our allies as w’ell as the countries w e ’re fighting against. A close study of the news papers today will help us make the cor rect decisions for w’orld peace tomorrow. This new offensive on both fronts has been a shot in the arm to sleeping con sciences. It’s ja r r e d people loose from their “ oh, hum, just another d a y ” atti tud e — it’s made people wake up and read. *‘I don’t know how anyone can say, ‘here spirit b egin s and m atter en d s’,” declared Dr. E llio tt Porter, pastor o f the M emorial P resbyterian Church at the fifth m arriage lecture, “ Spiritual A spects o f Marri a g e ,” at Miami U niversity.
