The Press F A I R L Y E F F I C I E N T A fairly efficient system Is this sorority plan for g etting n**w wom en, a fairly efficient system with only a few facets which could t a k e a bit o f bon ami. Possibly the one rule easiest end most frequently evaded is that lisped as number 2 0 ( which reads: “ 20. The maximum amount to be expended for theater parties, decora tions, rushing cards, favors, m u sk , cars, hayracks, refreshm ents outside the sorority house, shall be one hun dred (IOO) dollars.” Now the soror ities have turned lawyers and decided that since the am ount expended does not carry with it the specification as to who does the expending, the rule means the sorority as a house is lim ited to $100, Selah! each woman gives a party at from $15 to a s much mer** as she has. The sorority pays her about $1 from the $100, and the rule is observed after a fashion, and rushing prospers. Father donates the cards and favors, and so It goes. Th ere is no particular sin to this if prevalence is a guide. All the houses do it, and know the rest do. It will be the purpose of The Texan to permit free opinions from the students and faculty in tho F irin g Line column o f this paper. The students have tho privilege to express their opinions] in this column, and for tile guidance of the contributor and the! editors, the following rules must be observed: W riter must send in name with article, but only initials will be printed. ice. The article must be clean, decent, and free of personal mal AU statements of facts must be carefully verified by tbe w r i ter before the article i- submitted, for tho policy of the paper is never to publish articles that contain statements purporting to be facts, but in reality are misstatements. The editor reserves the right to reject any article which he thinks may do the University more harm than good, or if the desired correction of conditions can be secured by some other means. The editors welcome clean, constructive articles which have for their purpose the betterment of the community of the Uni versity. Though The Texan may at times stra y from the policy adopted, we conceive our duty to he ld steadfast to the principles outlined in this editorial, and believe success will reward our e ff orts. M A R R IN G T H E “F O R T Y A C R E S ” There is no college campus in Texas as beautiful as the Uni versity o f T exas’ “ F orty A cres,” and then? are many largo Texas colleges that do not have any campus at all, unless sidewalks lead ing from one building to another t an be called a “ campus.” The Texas campus with its traditional oaks near the Chemistry Building and its tref? shaded “ perip” cannot be duplicated in any other city or college town in Texas. A t the University of Missouri, it has long been an unwritten law that the student shall not smoke the instant he sets foot on the campus, and this rule keeps the students from littering the campus and buildings with unsightly cigarette buts. While there is no sense of advocating so stringent a rule for the University, every fa ir minded student w'ho gives a continental about the ap pearance of the “Forty A cre s” will agree that the campus will look better lf students were more careful when they dispose of their waste paper, and were morn careful about following the sidewalks in preference to th* unsightly trails. The question of throwing waste paper on the campus is a minor one, but fa r more damaging to the appearance are the many “ cow trails ' which students, always in too great a hurry to follow the sidewalk , f o l l o w in going from one building to another. A t the University of Missouri it has never been necessary to post “ keep o f f ” or “ throw your snipe outside the building” signs, and it should never be necessary as long as University stu dents maintain that standard of decency and appreciation for the “ Forty A cres” that should be expected of college students. T H E T E X A N N E E D S F R E S H M E N One of the best r e p o r t e r on The Daily Texan sta ff of the last long session was a freshman who had never written a line of copy in his life until he signed up for work on the campus daily H the fall. From the start he worker! hard, always obtained w hat he was sent after, made a good impression with the profes .ors and with the editors by his sincere desire to serve the students and the University a.s a reporter on The Texan, and within a short time he had developed into the most dependable member of The Texan staff. Not only did this freshman make good with The Texan, but he took an active part in the organization of a freshman literary society, and helped make it into a real organization. He carried the regular amount of University work and passed it. He is ju st one example of what a freshman can accomplish j by taking part in some student activity. O f course not all fre s h men ‘Ail! accomplish what this one did, but there were many others who made a very creditable showing on the campus pub lications. Whoever said that opportunity knocks only once is a faker. Opportunity is hanging around The Texan office, waiting to meet first year students who have initiative, and who have the desire to be of service to the other students and to the University by re porting for The Texan. K E E P UP Three thousand old student.* and two thousand new students! have arrived on the campus, and will begin the task of getting into harness. Different from the attitude of lethargy that pur sues the student in the summer, there is the feeling now of ’’keeping up” not only w ith what is happening on the “ F orty Acre?*:,*’ but in the outside world. There is so much happening on the campus that it is easy! to lose contact with the outside world, and forget that despite the' quizzes, round of social life, and etc., that the world still rocks merrily on. Newspapers are apt to lie around the various b oard-^ ing and fraternity houses, and in the reading room of the library vMIhout the student seizing the opportunity to digest a little o f I what is happening somewhere else besides on the limited campus. There is no better w ay to keep up with what is taking place! in the outside world than bo read newspapers, and there is per haps rn* better collection of newspapers in the state than in the attic o f the Education Building, where students may secure the morning'* paper and read it N o student can affo rd to call himself a well read person un til he has adopted the habit o f consistently reading daily a t least one newspaper, and keeping up with the world where those theo ries which a student is learning in the U niversity are put into jpracLcai use.
