Osborn# ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY LOST Trustees of Ohio State University reached way down to Texas when they selected a suitable man to take charge of the newly created Hureau of Business Research at that institution. Possibly the trustees had heard of the work of Dean Spurgeon Bell in the field of business administrat ion and of the first-rate department he had created at the University. Far visioned as to the f u t u r e of research in the business administration field* Dean Bell had also attracted their attention with his desire to do research work. When he becomes head of the new bureau at Ohio Slate, Dean Bell will begin the work he bari hoped would be possible to do at the University. He had consistently Impressed upon University authorities that a school of business administration needs a bureau of research ju st as a medical college needs a clinic, and a chemistry student needs a laboratory. Such a bureau, he pointed out. would have the two-fold purpose of raising the quality of instruction in campuus courses and of improving p r o c e s s e s in industry and business by eliminating waste in poor organization, lack of skill in administration in industry, and distribution. When Dean Bell was securer! as head of the School of Business Administration twelve years ago, it was hoped that by some means sufficient money would be obtained in order that he might have an opportunity to establish a bureau at the University. Y'eto of a part of the University appropriation by the Governor made it financially impossible for Dean Bdl to have any assur ance that he would be given a chance to raise the standard of the University School of Business Administration by research work. He became tired of waiting upon University authorities who failed to provide for a bureau, and accepted a position at Ohio State where he will have time and money to estalish a bureau that is made necessary because of the increased number of problems iii economic waste and the necessity of bringing practical problems into the curriculum of the students of commerce. -O' IS DRAMATIC AHT GOOD ONLY FOR THE SUMMER SESSION? The time has come when dramatic work iii the University need .student activity with and extra- not Le considered a mere curriculum standing. The adage that what Texas needs is more active students and less student activities is no longer applicable to such work. The first term of the Summer School has seen the presentation of three one-act plays by students regularly enrolled in courses designed for the purpose of presenting those plays. On Monday night another play will tie produced, this time, a three- act play, and th is time again prepared by members of those classes which have been instituted under the public-speaking departm ent. When these courses wviv offered this summer it was the first time that University students nave been given credit for such work. The Curtain Club and similar organizations have worked faithfully year afte r year producing plays for the sheer love of the game. Efforts to obtain subsidiary aid, or even credit for the work have been futile. Just when the Curtain Club gave up in despair, Dr. Eby, director of the .Summer School, working in con junction with the public-speaking department, has arranged for two classes daily in dram atic technique and production. George Foley* an experienced instructor and director, was brought to Texas to supervise the work. His success speaks for itself. The question which naturally arises is: “Why, If such work is so successful in the summer, can't it be given in the Long Session ?” It is the opinion of many, of the director of the Summer School in particular, that the time has come when the University of Texas needs and should have permanent courses in dramatic art. The question of necessity has been brought up since agitation for this work started, Judged on the basis of necessity there are few things of a cultural nature that can lay claim to being absolute necessities. We can get along without plays just as we can get along without music and art, but why should we do so? The public-speaking department has room for another man. When the present work of ©leys’ classes has been completed there will still lie room for the work of those ciases. There is no reason th at is sound and based on real argum ents why Foley or some other man cannot lie obtained to carry on this work in the Long Session. W ith the resignation of Mr* Eagleson and Mr. Jones, work of this nature has been left without a champion on the campus. The Curtain Club will carry on next year, and the of ficers which have just Item elected may be counted on to do their utmost to produce worthwhile plays. But they are powerless to do ra d work so long as their efforts fall in the extra-curriculum class, and so long as a man who takes on such work is regarded with suspicion by the powers that be. Our solution in to keep some man here w ho can produce results*, to institute courses in dramatic art in the Long Session, and to develop the pM M i£R}e# of Texas for dram atic productions, M U l l J » JC,.
