Women of Faculty Make Merry at "Rowdy Party" in Attic of Club

In the attic of the Faculty Wom­
en s ( lab the women of the faculty 

attended a “rowdy party” Friday 
slight. The costumes of the poverty­
stricken faculty women were in keep­

ing with the decorations of the attic. 
Strings of popcorn and dried peppers 
vied with bundles of hay and corn to 
make the scene of the festivities at­
tractive.

One of the most expensive prizes 
that was given during the evening 
was awarded to Mrs. Joe Moore for 
composing the cleverest conclusion to 
the limerick:

“There once were some faculty women 
just 

started 

Whore 

off 

affairs 
a-swimmin’;

They bought tables and chairs,
Until unawares,

They saw the poor-house a-kimmin’.”

Barn dances, a human 

spelling 
match, London bridge, and other old­
fashioned games were indulged in by 
the “rowdy” crowd. Margaret Cooper 
gave a reading, “Miss Pharaoh’s Sun­
day School Class.” And then, the 
wagon from the “forks of the creek” 
arrived with its delegation of “poor 
folks.”

The patches on Miss Gearing’s dress 
were practical examples of the cor­
rect way of making stripes and checks 
match, as taught in the Home Eco­
nomics department. Miss Henrietta 
Porr, as the “love-child of Liz,” dem- 
strated the correct way to apply rouge 
and freckles, and her snaggle teeth 
were the envy of the other guests. 
Mrs. Goree and Miss Wheatley were 
the perfect examples of colored folks 
at the swell poverty party. Miss Ed- 
leen Begg won many admiring ex­
clamations with her hat of huge pro­
portions.

At the Fashion Review which was 
held during the evening, all fifty of 
the guests promenaded to exhibit their 
costumes, and the prizes for the most 
pitiful costumes were awarded. The 
first prize consisted of a piece of 
furniture, and was given to Liz and 
love-child, represented by Mrs. 
her 
Wagon and Miss Henreitta Porr. But 
the most destitute of 
the “rowdy 
crowd” was given a second prize be­
cause there were so many mouths to 
feed. A nice pig was given to the 
Peewee Dooley fam ily from the forks 
of the creek, represented by members 
of the Home Economies department. 
Big red apples, peanuts, and polar 
bars weer served to the poverty-strick­
en crowd at the close of the evening 
of fun.

The University Ladies’ Club enter­
tained with a delightful reception at 
the University Faculty Club on San 
Antonio Street Wednesday afternoon.

Although the reception was given in 
honor of no special group, a

number of guests were present, and 
the occasion was marked with great

mistress, and the toast scheme was 
“Tho Evolution of Milady’s Powder 
Puff.” The sorority colors of rose and 
white were carried out in th* decora­
tions, the powder-puff place cards, and 
the favors, which were tiny dolls sit­
ting on fluffy powder puffs. Rose car­
nations, the sorority flower, decorated 
the table.

Little Louise Davis, in a powder- 
puff costume, appearing from a pink 
powder box on a table, sang “ I Must 
Powder My Nose.” The following

A MOTHER’S LOVE

A Dallas woman recently entered a hou«e which was quickly 
becoming a mas* of flam es to rescue her six year old son who 
had gone back into the burning home to find a small trinket 
to which he was attached. The mother saved the life of her 
small child through her love for him and the heroism in her 
which came to the surface when she saw that her son was in 
danger.

Fire bolds no danger for mother love, neither fire nor death, 
storm or sickness. Deep in the tender understanding natural 
to a woman who is the mother of children, mother love is almost 
the one eternal and lasting thing in the world. 
It will brave 
a1! dangers, undergo a1! hardships, endure all sacrifices, and 
still emerge from all these a beautiful, shining thing that is 
enshrined and enthroned in the heart of every man and woman 
who has known a mother’s love.

It is a thing not to la* bought with money. It is found in the 
poorest cottage, on the meanest streets, in the darkest byways, 
and wherever it is found, no matter how dark the surroundings 
may be, mother love lights and beautifies and guides 
the way 
through all the hard places, the ruts, and the darkness. A mother’s 
hand, soft and white, or red and wrinkled from the most menial 
labor, is often the only beacon or lighthouse which many poor 
wretches are guided back to safe harbors and quiet waters, for 
no matter how far into sin and wrong doing a child may go, the 
mother stands ready and waiting to receive it, even in the shad­
ow of the gallows, for has it not been truly said:
“ If I were hanged on the highest hi!!,

Mother o’ mine, mother o’ mine,
I know whose* love would follow me still,
Mother o’ min**, mother o* mine.”

WHY FLOYD COLLINS ATTRACTED SO MUCH 
ATTENTION

Floyd Collins was trapped in a Kentucky cave by a boulder 
which fell across his leg in such a way as to make escape impos­
sible. VV hen it was discovered that the man had been imprisoned, 
every conceivable plan was tried that might have resulted in im­
mediate rescue. After these attempts had failed, the news ftlashed 
all over the nation that Collins must be reached by making a cdf- 
lieut passage into the side of the cave. Then, there was a chance 
that this last resort might fail, and the man must die 
the 
cave.

The reaction of the public was spontaneous. From a com­
mon hillm an Floyd Collins became a human being whose life 
hung in a balance. For two weeks the world read of the efforts 
of engineers and volunteer workmen to effect a rescue; the de­
vices used to keep the unfortunate man alive; and the determined 
hopefulness of the Collins family. Old and young, rich and jtoor 
manifested interest in and common concern over the plight of 
the imprisoned man. Newspapers gave the stories extraordinary 
publicity, and the common talk in the home and in public was of 
the sensational duel between man’s science and nature's strength 
and Indifference

Why this interest and publicity? Floyd Collins had won no 
personal fame. The world owed him no debt of gratitude. Man's 
interest in and sympathy for his fellowmen and an inherent love 
for the unusual made the Collins story one of the greatest human 
interest st or ie.- of the day.

Men arid women are naturally attracted by what those about 
them are doing. This interest is a mixture of curiosity and fel­
low feeling. Curiosity is as natural as life. Men read and talked 
of the rescue of Collins because they wished to know what wa* 
being done, why it was tieing done, and who was doing it. There 
was not a one who read of the h illm an ’* plight who was not 
moved lo pity for the helpless man, doomed to almost certain 
death in a lone, dark cave. Sympathy extended to the anxious 
family of the man, and sympathetic admiration to 
the rescue 
party w h o worked rn bravely and persistently against unequal 
odd*..

Unusual happenings have a certain fascination for even the 
m m i sluggish imaginations. The same thing that makes the six- 
year-old tot love the tales of Red Riding Hood and Jack the Giant 
Killer make* the grow n man enjoy a story such as the entrapping 
and attempted rescue of Floyd Collins. Miners may be caught 
in a mine and perish, or a man may get killed in a cave without 
creating a thtjrd as much stir arid interest as the incident of Col­
lins' imprisonment and death. The falling of the boulder at the 
very moment he was exploring the cave, the unusual characteris­
tic* of hi* position, ids obvious suffering and fortitude, and the 
suspense of the ill-timed rescue appealed to the romantic in man’*

when a certain young person crossed the floor at a University 
dance recently. He was immaculately attired in a tuxedo, his 
blonde hair was slick and glossy, his face was smooth, and his 
eyes were flashing—altogether he was a striking figure. He pos­
sessed a grace and a nonchalence that would easily be the envy 
of any “shiek.” His dancing was superb. “His name is Helen 
Sandel,” came the paradoxical reply.

Every sport has its great pinch- 
hitters. The Texas baseball league 
boasted one of the greatest pinch- 
hitters in sport several years ago in 
Dodo Criss of Houston, former big 
league pitcher. When Criss went to 
bat in a pinch, the Houston team 
was certain to win unless the oppos­
ing pitcher walked him. There are 
several great “pinch hitters” in ma­
jor league baseball today, among 
them being Eddie Collins, manager 
of the Chicago White Sox; Rogers 
Hornsby of St. Louis, batting cham­
lea gu e; and 
pion of the National 
Tris Speaker, manager of the Cleve­
land Indians. 
Two of these three 
greatest “pinch hitters” or “money- 
hitters,” as they are called in the 
East, are from Texas. Hornsby was 
born in Austin but now claims Fort 
Worth as his home, w'hile Speaker 
hails from Hubbard City.

ters,” too. Jack Dempsey proved he 
was a member of this class after

Miss Sandel is peculiarly suited 
to the role she plays so often. She 
is five feet, ten 
inches in height, 
fair, boyishly graceful, and strong.
Yet she is not masculine in appear­
ance. The softness of her features 
and the femininity of her manner 
disproves any masculinity that might 
be attributed to her costume.

She has three suits of men’s cloth­
ing in her wardrobe. “I wish I could 
afford a mans’ whole wardrobe,” 
said Miss Sandel. “I love to dress as 
a boy occasionally, but I must con­
fess that it is a relief to get skirts 
on once more.”
