LET TH ERE BE PEA CE M ilitary training in the University of Texas means the end of student self-government. Certain very esti­ mable gentlemen have been tryin g for many months to influence the Board of Regents to consent to the estab­ lishment of m ilitary courses and dis­ cipline. There is no question about the sincerity of their motives, but they have not kept up with the setady growth of student control. M ilitary training is essentially un­ Its substitution for the democratic. athletic work as conducted by the physical training departm ent of the University would be a severe loss to the freedom and joy of athletic and physical exercise. There are dozens of m ilitary schools fo r those in Texas. Opportunities men and women so inclined are plen­ tiful. The U niversity should be free from any coercive training. Opposition -to m ilitary train in g does not prevent intelligent investigation of the subject. Out of one hundred applications for the school year affiliation during 1915-16, eighteen high schools in the State were successful. This increases the list of schools to 202, from which graduates may enter the University. All graduates from schools having 14 units of credit may enter uncondition­ ed; those from schools with 12 units enter with conditions, while those from schools with less than 12 credits must take entrance exams. The campaign manager, Otis Nelson, says that the sppirit is splendid, everybody speaking a good word for the Y. M. C. A. He says that he is confident that this spirit is due to the campaign ’ or $5000, made among the old stu dents last sprinf, when over 900 men subscribed for membership. All new men are being systemati cally solicited, and the manager says that before the campaign closes, they are going to get 300 first-year stu dents, which will give the association the largest membership in its history. One of the most interesting features of this year’s registration, as com­ pared with that of former years, is the steady growth in the number of transfers who come from other col­ leges. This year thq increase is es pedally large. At 6 o’clock yesterday afternoon the total number of transfers were 273, and there is evidence that there wil I be probzably twenty-five or thir­ ty more to enter. L ast year there were only 258 transfers. Most of the transfers who have en­ tered so far have come from Texas colleges, such a s T. C. U., Baylor, Austin College, and Southwestern, but there are also a few from colleges out of the State.
