The only one of its kind i.n the United States, the company was begun in November of 1976 when Yacov Sharir traveled from Tel Aviv, Israel to Austin, Texas to serve as. the artistic director. Soon after arriving, Sharir made trips to other areas of the United States where he interviewed in terested dancers. Company members come from all parts of the country. The American Deaf Dance Company's premiere performance took place in Austin on August 6, 1977 at Hogg Auditorium on the University of Texas campus. The press was enthusiastic and reviews appeared in all the area papers. Invitations to appear in other cities began to arrive shortly afterward. On November 9, the company gave a repeat performance at U. T. 's B. Iden Payne Theater. On March 31, 1978, the company gave a joint performance with the Dallas Ballet. All three productions were cosponsored by the University of Texas Drama Department. A tour of the American Deaf Dance Company will begin in late summer and continue through fall.
