Danceworks' Season 18 focuses on two distinct explorations of that creative energy. One exploration stems from our individual cultural heritages and their means of expression, the other is the exploration of interactive and new technologies and how their use affects performance. It is our intention to continue to challenge the ideas and preconceptions of dance as we push boundaries and open the experience to new possibilities. Through the years Austin audiences have responded to our work with enthusiasm, and for this we are so grateful. Your attendance, participation and support continually stimulate new ideas and directions for us. This season we are excited to offer Austin audiences a series of performances that truly express our passion for dance. The Season Premiere is an eclectic mix of new and past audience favorites that focuses on the art of pure human movement and deals with issues related to our social, cultural and gender make-up. In January, we begin ~001 by hosting a selected group of our own Sharir+ Bustamante dancers and other local choreographers. Maintaining a sensitivity to the members of the local dance community is of utmost importance to the artistic and administrative leadership of Sharir+ Bustamante Danceworks, and we are honored to be able to provide these exceptionally talented artists with the opportunity to present their work as part of our season. This season finale represents Sharir+ Bustamante Danceworks' most ambitious dance and technology work to date. Body Automatic/ Body Resistant, brings together choreographers, dancers, designers, visual artists, computer engineers and many others to produce an interactive dance and theater work exploring the fascinating convergence of digital technologies and more traditional expressions in contemporary dance. We are profoundly thankful to everyone who has helped to make the last seventeen years possible. Firstly we want to thank the artists who have danced and shared and grown with Sharir+ Bustamante Danceworks. We are equally grateful to the following: the University of Texas College of Fine Arts and the Department of Theatre and Dance for offering residence and enabling the company to pursue its vision; to the S+BD Board of Directors, whose commitment, guidance and leadership has lifted the company to great heights; and to all our funding sources, without whose support and recognition the first seventeen years would not have been possible. Thank you for joining us tonight to celebrate Season 18. TRIADA. Sharir+ Bustamante Danceworks, founded by Yacov Sharir in 198~ as Sharir Dance Company, continually expands the boundaries of dance with keen intellect, humor and blazing physicality which has won them international acclaim. Led by award-winning choreographers Yacov Sharir and Jose Luis Bustamante, the company was selected by the National Endowment for the Arts as a participant in its i 994Advancement Program for"emerging organizations of artistic excellence," one of only 36 organizations chosen nationwide for the four-year program. A perennial recipient of organizational support from the NEA, the Texas Commission on the Arts, the Mid -America Arts Alliance, and the City of Austin, Sharir+ Bustamante Danceworks regularly tours regionally, nationally and has been selected for international festivals in France, Israel, Spain, Canada, Holland and Portugal. With a prestigious i99~ fellowship from the Banff Centre for the Arts in Canada, Yacov Sharir produced an internationally acclaimed project entitled "Virtual Bodies: Travels Within," which premiered in i993. In the summer i998, Sharir completed Robo-City, an educational, interactive technology exhibit co-created with a 3o-person team including high school students, teachers and multimedia artists for the Austin Children's Museum. Jose Luis Bustamante's exploration of non-traditional performance sites has garnered much attention and praise. From his outdoor site-specific collaborations with performance artist Sally Jacques to his creation of The Cyclical Night, performed in a i950's warehouse in East Austin, Bustamante continues to explore his unique and innovative use of alternative spaces. Michael Barnes, arts reviewer for the Austin American-Statesman, described Bustamante' s COURT 6, performed inside a racquetball court with two glass walls, as "exactly the kind of breakthrough performance Sharir Dance Company was founded i5 years ago to propagate." As the professional company-in-residence at The University of Texas College of Fine Arts, Sharir+ Bustamante Danceworks has presented and collaborated with many internationally renowned companies including Hartford Ballet, Trisha Brown Dance Company, Nina Wiener and Dancers, Margaret Jenkins Dance Company, Lewitzky Dance Company, Doug Varone and Dancers and David Dorfman Dance. The company's most heralded collaboration was its long-term partnership with Merce Cunningham, the Cunningham Dance Foundation and The University of Texas College of Fine Arts. Designed to enable Merce to create work outside New York and to share his artistic process with Austin artists and audiences, this unique partnership began in 1988 and produced three multi-week residencies which are used as national models. For 17 years Sharir+ Bustamante Danceworks has been a stable force within the Austin arts community, fostering the growth of countless dancers, choreographers, visual artists, composers, musicians and multi-media artists. Through producing and commissioning new work, Sharir and Bustamante have built reputations as pioneers on the forefront of new dance. Purveyor of fine flowers.
