Rainer Amon latest Marine Science Ph.D. -Rainer Amon is currently visiting in Austriabut will soon be returning to his native land and the opportunity to ski on-a more permanent basis, having recently · completed his Ph.D. in Marine Science under the direction ofRon Benner. Rainer previously studied at the University of Vienna, Austria, where he received a Master's of Science and served as a research · and teaching assistant. While at UTMSI, Rainer received an E. J. Lund Scholarship. .The title of Rainer's dissertation is Microbial and photochemical degradation ofdissolved organic matt~r in aquatic ecosystems. .. c MICROBIAL AND PHOTOCHEMICAL DEGRADATION OF DISSOLVED ORGANIC MATTER IN AQUATIC ECOSYSTEMS Rainer Maria Wolfgang Amon, Ph.D. Supervisor: Ronald Benner Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) is the most abundant form of organic carbon in aquatic environments and represents one of the largest reactive carbon reservoirs on Earth. Microorganisms are considered the primary remineralizers of DOC, but little is known about the factors regulating microbial utilization. The reactivity and microbial utilization of DOC and its high-molecular-weight (HMW; >1 kDa) and lowmolecular-weight (LMW; <1 kDa) components was investigated along a gradient .from freshwater to seawater in the northern Gulfof Mexico and two tropical rivers. Within each environment bacterial growth and respiration was greater in HMW than LMW incubations. On a carbon-normalized basis heterotrophic bacteria typically utilized HMW DOC to a greater extent and at a higher rate than LMW DOC. All independent measurements indicate that the bulk of HMW DOC is more bioreactive than the bulk of LMW DOC. This difference was greatest in the phytoplankton bloom sample, where 23% HMW but only 7% of LMW DOC was consumed, and least with DOM from the Rio Negro where 1.2% ofHMW and 0.9% of LMW DOC were utilized during 24 h of incubation. This suggests that the traditional model of dissolved organic matter (DOM) degradation, stating that LMW compounds are most reactive, does not apply to.the bulk of natural DOM. Rather, the data support a new model whereby the bulk of HMW DOM is more bioreactive and less diagenetically altered than the bulk of the LMW DOM. This is consistent with the observed predominance (80% of DOC) of refractory LMW DOC in the ocean. This model also agrees with the · bioreactivities of bulk DOM determined in the investigated environments. Patterns of heterotrophic bacterial and primary production agreed well across a salinity gradient indicating the bioreactive nature of fresh phytoplankton-derived DOM. In contrast, substrate addition experiments revealed the limited bioavailability of Amazon River DOC. However, comparing biological mineralization to photochemical mineralization of Amazon River DOC indicated that the photoreactivity of this bioresistant DOC was high as demonstrated by a 15% loss of DOC within 27 h of exposure to natural sunlight. I have never been susceptible to motion sickness but the CIENCIA's corkscrew motion did me in. The only people not sick were Kornicker, Conover, and Captain Moore. What was even worse, was that Conover had us looking at planktonic algal cells through a microscope as the vessel rolled along! The best Captain Moo;e story I know, having to do with a male Institute technician and a female graduate student, unfortunately cannot be reprinted in an open newsletter. However, I will always be grateful to him for the help he gave me my first summer at Port Aransas. As a brand new graduate student, I knew.nothing about the mechanics ofconducting research. H. T. Odum gave me twelve aquaria and said "Go see Captain Moore and come back when you have some microcosm data". Captain Moore, who also doubled as the general Institute handyman, gave me the materials and showed me how to set up lights, plumb water baths, and hook up a pH meter and recorder for my microcosms. I could never even have gotten started on my dissertation without him. By the way, tell Neal I'm at South Alabama (rbeyers@jaguarl.usouthal.edu). (Robert J. I was already with the company and she wanted me to work in her department when one ofher employees moved away. This was a terrific boost for my selfesteem arul budget. Her department consists of supervising five women including myself. She praises all her employees and considers her department to be the best staffed. In our department we ... always celebrate each other's birthday by going out to lunch. This is a planned event and considered a must... spend the first 30 minutes ofeach day doing a "mental check-up" on each other. Ifwe have a family emergency, Lynn wants us to take care of that first. Her theory is we will be the best at work if our home front is secure. If she realizes we are troubled by a problem at home she will tell us to go, not to worry and return ready to conduct business again. How many bosses hand you clothes out of her closet? Go to your grandmother's funeral? Visit you in the hospital? Worry when you're too quiet? Check on you when you are sick? Give you advice from her personal experiences? I am able to leave at a moment's notice. This is exceptional for a working mother when a child is sick at school I've left work without telling her and the next day the first thing she asks is ''How's the kid"? Last, but not least, she gives me a generous amount of independence in the office concerning decision making. We have our disagreements but communication makes the outcome successful and then we move on.' She expects only the best work from her people and I believe we strive to give her.the best because that is the way she treats us. She really is a SUPER-visor. Ifyou need more information, contact Venus Mills. Most often I dredge up something from the distant past for the LazGaz which shows a bit of wisdom as true today as when written. e. g. MSI scientists ·· predicting-in 1946-circulation problems in the Laguna Madre from a landfill causeway. Not so the Egabrag Woes piece this issue. In.fact, some might feel that the term, good promoter, is an oxymoron. MSI has had a few promoters as Directors. But the Institute did not ...easily and naturally grow into its . proper sphere and become a recognized and outstanding branch of this University as a result of their efforts .. As I recall the reign of two promoters, rather than easy and natural MSI was hectic and chaotic and growth was either an illusion or temporary. Although promoting a promoter, perhaps Gordon Gunter was actually doing a good job himself as Acting Director and someone had the·sense to notice as he was eventually appointed Director. Perhaps... Anyway, seems as if promoters wind up promoting themselves and their own specialty and not MSI. An·updated listing in a new format follows of all the UTMSI graduates. We have made a start at including·e-mail addresses . . How about sending the LazGaz your latest news, comments, or whatever by e-mail so others will know your address and we can add it to the listing.
