Curtis Suttle --has been awarded a $94,106 grant from the Office of Naval Research for his research ·
proposal entitled "Infection ofBiolumincicent Plankton by Viruses & Genetic Diversity in Marine Viruses,"(Grant N00014-92-J-1676, 05/01/92-12/31/93, UTMSI92-28). This project will concentrate on identifying..
genetic sequences that are conserved within algal vii-uses.. Such sequence information is valuable for at
lea.St two reasons. First, it will provide a means ofdetermining whether or not a particular alga contains
genetic material of viral origin. This is extremely important as it may show whether lysogeny is .a

phenomenon that is widely occurring in algae and eukaryotic phytoplankton. If so, this could be an
underlying mechgllism Ca.using the high genetic diversity observed among some species of algae. · Seeond,conserved genetic sequences will provide a basis to make comparisons among algal viruses which infectdifferent hosts. This will make it possible to address the questions of whether particular genes within the
algal viruses share a common ancestry and whether such genes are similar to those folind in other virusfamilies. 
Cruise #588 -
On June 20 the RIV LONGHORN cruised to 55 fathoms 45 miles Southeast of Port.\ransas carrying Curtis Suttle's Graduate Biological Oceanography students. 16 persons comprised the
scientific group for field sampling and work with the CTD. The weather was good with seas 1 to 3 feet. 
Cruise #589 --Another class cruise followed on June 25 for Paul Montagna's Undergraduate Course in Marine Invertebrates. The scientific party consisted of 23 persons. The work comprised trawling, benthic grab sampling, and biological dredging at 5, 10, and 14 fathoms all Southeast of Port Aransas. Cruise #590 --Ken Dunton's Undergraduate Course in Estuarine Ecology went aboard the RIV LONGHORNJune 26 for a cruise through the inland waterway to Port Isabel and then a return trip to Por. 
Aransas in the Gulf. RIVLONGHORN spent the night of the 26th in Port Mansfield and the 27th in Port Isabel and returned to Port Aransas at 0220 the morning ofthe 29th. Fifteen persons were in the scientific group. Small boats were also utilized in the sea grass studies with the RIVLONGHORN z:eturning to the role she often plays of mother ship.

RIV KATY --June 20-July 3 --There were three visiting class trips during this period and a specially 
scheduled cruise for MSI employees and families and the new Port Aransas Independent School District Superintendent, Dr. Lawrence Lane and his wife Sandy. Making the trip were Rick Kalke with children Lauren and Chris, Rick Tinnin with Stephani.e and Patricia; Nancy and Ed Buskey with their children Dani and Nikki; Dean and Barb Stockweli with Kyle; Paul and Angela Montagna with Kate, Tess, and Jack; and Ken and Sue Dunton with Nathan, Karli, and Matt. Rick Tinnin demonstrated trawling and other procedures to the new superintendent and the other.guests. The trip proved to be somewhat more popularthan expected and another trip will be scheduled next week to take care of those who missed out on this first one. 
Smallboat Trips --June 20-July ;l --BIG WHALER, 5 trips; JEFFERSON, 2 trips; JETBOAT, 2 trips;KLEBERG, 3 trips; SONNY MAC, 1 trip. 
MSL Transfers to .General Libraries --Several major organizational changes impacted the Marine Science Library (MSL) this past year. After an exchange of visits between staff of the Marine Science Institute and the General Libraries, the MSL was transferred from the Marine Science Institute to the 
General Libraries. The MSL is one ofnine branch libraries under Ms. Virginia Phillips, Assistant Director for Branch Services. Projects --A public workstation with CDROM reader was added with access to UTCAT, TAMU on'.'"line catalog & Wilson Index on-line. Several coastal bibliographic databases were loaded onto that workstation along with the Institute for Scientific Information's ·Current Contents (on diskette). Other projectsunderway or completed include the review and culling of the reprint collection and the packingfor transfer of 60 boxes of duplicate journals to The University of Texas, Pan American University Library in Edinburgh. Plans were completed and the Beasley Collection (Judge John R. Beasley's personal papers and library) were moved to the Barker Texas History Center at Austin. Finances --The loss of purchasing power which continued this year combined with the current Texas economy made it necessary to cut serial titles again. This makes the gifts of the special proceedings, books, 
and journals donated to the library by faculty/staff members of special value. A sincere thanks for meetingproceedings donated by Tony Amos, Allen Davis, and Terry Whitledge. Members of the Marine Science Advisory Council are active in raising special funds and endowed accounts for the Marine Science Library,without which we would find it most difficult to maintain a quality library. The library is collected and maintained for the use of the faculty, students, and staff. Its value is derived from its use.-Ruth Grundy New Pier and Pier Laboratory --Firm dates are now established for bidding the first, and major phase, of the pier/pier laboratory project. A prebid meeting (for prospective bidders) will be held ~n Port Aransas at the Visitor Center Conference Room at 10 am on Thursday, July 9. Bids will be opened in Austin (at UT's Architectural & Engineering Services) at 2:30 pm on Tuesday, July 21. This portion of the construction covers the pier and elevated walkway and the piling foundation for the new pier laboratory building (which is located on land but connected to the pier, over the jetty via the elevated walkway). These plans and specifications were prepared by Russell Veteto Engineering. Plans and specifications for the Laboratory Building are being prepared in-house by Architectural & Engineering Services, and this portion of the work will be bid later.USFWSINFCRC Building --The U. S. Fish and Wildlife expects to advertize for bids by about July 20 and award a contract before September 15 for their new building. Construction should start sometime in October 1992. The building, of about 4,000 square feet, will contain facilities for Dr. Scott Carr's work in association with Peter Thomas. The project is known (to USFWS) as the Effiuent Treatment Laboratory Building. As shown in the drawing below, the new building is designed with a traditional appearance which is coordinated to the style of the older frame buj.ldings located in the immediate vicinity on the Port Aransas campus. The building will be situated to the East of Dorm A and to the North of the Laboratory Clarifier. 
FAML Refrigerator/Freezer Installation --The MSI Physical Plant staff completed last week the installation of the new refrigerator/freezer for the Fisheries and Mariculture Laboratory Campus. The new refrigerator/freezer was obtained from Randolph Airforce Base via surplus. Jerry Clanton and his crew went to Randolph, disassembled the unit, transp·orted it back in pieces to Port Aransas, poured a new concrete foundation, reassembled it, and made repairs. The refrigerator/freezer is now "workinggood" and is a valuable improvement to our mariculture facilities.

Tides --July 6-19 --Predictions are for tidal heights at the Ti.de Tower on the South Jetty ofthe Aransas Pass. Heights are given infe:et above or below Mean Sea Level (MSLJ. The shaded area is nighttime. Remember, this is tidal height, not tidal current. Slack water is when the wiggly line crosses the MSL line, not at the peaks and valleys, where the tidal current will be at fuU flood or ebb.

Rick Tinnin reports on PLESE Workshop --I just returned from a four day trip to Greely, Colorado, in support of a team of Texas teachers participating in an NSF sponsored Professional Leadership for Earth Systems Education (PLESE) workshop. Thirteen teams of teachers from ten mid-continent states are learning about changes in the Earth Systems from scientists involved in global change research, and are developing classroom instructional materials about Planet Earth and making plans to lead local and statewide Earth Systems Education workshops in the coming school year. Each team includes a teacher from elementary, middle school, and high school, plus a school administrator and university liaison. After working hard Thursday, Friday, and Saturday until 3 pm, the Texas team, including MSI's own Bill: Slingerland (ex-MSI technician, ex-cook of the RIVLONGHORN, now high school marine science teacher 
in San Antonio) bugged out for Estes Park and the Trail Ridge road to the top of the mountains in RockyMountains National Park. We saw over 90 elk, a dozen mule deer and a wide assortment of marmots,picas, Stellers Jays, and other wildlife. And I want all to know that on June 27 I was wearing a hoodedsweatshirt at an altitude of 12,198 feet and it was refreshingly cold!! --Rick Tinnin

Flour BluffISD --Teacher Workshop --On June 22 & 23rd, 17 K-12 grade teachers from the FlourBluff ISD attended a Marine Science Field Experience workshop led by MES program manager, RickTinnin. On Monday, the teachers·participated in a discussion focusing on the physiography of the Gulf ofMexico and specifically on the Texas coast and its barrier islands, prot_ected bays, estuaries and lagoons.Background information relating to the rock jetty habitat was also covered as an introduction to a rock jettyand barrier beach field trip before lunch. After lunch, the participants boarded the RIV KATY for acollecting cruise into Redfish Bay. 
Plankton samples, otter trawls and mud grabs were collected andexamined on the boat. The teachers were introduced to a variety of collecting gear and methods andsamples were iced down for closer examination during a Tuesday afternoon laboratory session. On Tuesdaymorning, the participants were introduced to the mangrove, saltmarsh, mudflat and seagrass habitats andthen spent the rest of the morning taking a firsthand look at those enVironments. We mucked about onthe mudflats and spartina marsh and waded, seined, cored and push-netted in the seagrass meadows offStedman Island in Redfish Bay. After lunch, they spent. time identifying, classifying, labeling andmicroscopically examining representative samples of the plankton, benthic organisms, plants, and animals
that were collected over the two days. They also spent time developing lesson plans and integrating their
field experiences with the wide range of classroom materials on display from the MES resource andurriculum library. The course evaluations were extremely positive and the teachers left happy, tired and.,unburned from their experiences in the field. --Rick Tinnin

Henrietta Guajardo to Retire --Henrietta came to work for UT on December 7, 1.981 as a BuildingAttendant II. She was promoted to Assistant Building Attendant Leader on December 1, 1984 and hasmaintained this position with exceptional work performance. On July 31; 1992, Henrietta will be retiringto become a lady of leisure and, perhaps, a professional bingo player. We will miss you and wish you good1uck in the future.Rebecca Ford Resigns --Rebecca was hired as temporary help in the MSI library on May 31, 1982 andbecame officially employed on September 1, 1982, as a Senior Secretary. Her job was reclassified to aLibrary Assistant II on September 1, 1985. Her assistance to one and all is·appreciated and she will bemissed. Rebecca is leaving UT employment on July 12, 1992 due to health reasons. She plans to sleep forsix months and do mysterious things. Don't be surprised ifyou see Rebecca taltlng a bungee jump. The noon meal on Thursday, the 9th, will be the last one served to first term students. Secondterm students may start moving in on Thursday, July 9. The cafeteria will start serving second sessionstudents with breakfast on.Friday, July 10.Textbooks --The required textbooks are available for purchase from Kathy Quade (A209) at any timeduring normal office hours. (Textbook sales at Port Aransas were arranged following requests fromstudents last year for local sales--purchasing the books in Austin or Corpus Christi was very inconvenientfor those attending class in Port Aransas.) 
''New" Computer Column --I contributed a column about computers during the run of Egabrag Woes,the now defunct newsletter. I don't mind doing the same for the much improved Lazarette Gazette (no
offense to Curtis and Amy, just kudos to John). The column will not be regular, because I don't feel thereis much to report on now that computers are a true commodity and are much more user friendly. Everyoneknows that the hottest computers on the market are selling for less than $3,000 today and many of youhave discovered Windows.
Recycling Old Computers --I think the most interesting problem is: what do you do with the oldcomputers? Use them as door stops? I have two gathering dust on shelves, and two more that needrecycling soon. We should probably form some sort of network to recycle these old machines. Many arefunctional and could meet someone's needs. What do you think?
Computer Magazines in Library --I give the library two computer magazines. PC WEEK is a weekly
newspaper that reports on industry news. It is a great source for news on the latest breaking industry
news on hardware, software, peripherals, and prices. Ifyou invest in computer companies, you will also
find financial news. More of you may be interested in SCIENTIFIC COMPUTING. This is a monthly
magazine that touts "technology for the laboratory." It is a great place to get information about automating
laboratory equipment. The articles in the magazine are usually about uni.que computer applications in

laboratories. The next time you are in the library, give these two magazines a quick look.
The VAX --I no longer operate the VAX. If you need an account, or wish to close your account upon
departure, contact John Shedd. The system configuration has changed quite a bit since it was moved from
L205, so I don't usually know the answers to technical questions. Ifyou have problems with the VAX, call

John Shedd. 
Final Note --The MSI computer committee has not met since December 1, 1989. Ifthe gap in time is an
·ndication of how pressing our computer needs are, then I expect this column will be very irregular.

For example, on the old computers, let us know what you have--or what you are lookingfor--and we can list it. I had planned to run an article on the legal problems ofcopying software, but will holdit till next time. Readers could contribute articles about their favorite or new software (or hardware). Most
ofus working in WordPerfect would enjoy having a forum to solve problems and exchange tips. Access to MD ·(Material Data Safety) sheets is now available via UTCATPLUS. This will save a tremendous amount 01paper, and we will have details on it next time in Computer Comer. Also next time I promise to have somearticles of more general interest (sorry there is nothing but news in the newsletter this time). Correction--my
