McGEORGE BUNDY THE WHITE HOUSE SUBJECT: Message from the President to German Trade Union The German Federation of Trade Unions (DGB) has invited Mr. Roy Wilkins of the NAACP to attend its May Day rally in Berlin and has expressed the hope that he could bring a message to the rally from a high personage in Washington. (Wilkins will be in Berlin at that time as an "American Specialist" on a Department-sponsored lecture tour). Mayor Brandt and Bundesrat President Zinn will be speakers at the rally. The United States Mission at Berlin has endorsed the DGB request for a message. T.le Department believes that a brief message from the President would be appropriate and useful as a demonstration of friendship and of the common interests which exist between the American and German peoples.
