Dear Mr. President: 
On the eve of my departure, it gives me great pleasure to express to Your Excellency my appre­ciation of the many indications you have made of your friendship and esteem for my country. 
I leave with the thought that I have done my utmost to increase the already warm feeling of friend­ship held by our two countries, and that my mission has borne fruit. Although it saddens me to leave my many friends, I am looking forward with great anticipation to my new post at the Holy See. In Rome, or wherever I am, I will always remain, Mr. President, a good and devoted friend of the United States.
