13/4/40 -NO: 1. R.A.F. SEARCH FOR THE GERMAN FLEET. The Air Ministry announces: Throughout yesterday (Friday) a series of st~ong formations of R.A.F. bombers searched Norwegian and Danish waters for the purpose of locating and attacking units of the German Pleet returning to their home bases•. As already reported, one formation penetrated into Kristiansand Fiord, attacked German warships and met with strong opposition. Another formation, proceeding north towards the Stavanger area, was met by a large enemy fighter force. In the day's hard-fought actions, four Messerscrhmitt fighters were shot down. Two more are believed to have been destroyed and others were damaged. Our losses in the day's engagements were eight aircraft• Two others came down on the sea on their way home. The following official conununique was issued this morning from French General Headquarters:­ On the evening of the 12th in the region of the Saar our artillery fired on the enemy works in construction. During the night, infantry activity along the banks of the Rhine both in the region to the eaet of Mulhouse and in the vicinity of Strasbourg. The enemy attempted, unsuccessfully, a raid on an island in the Rhine, occupied by our troops, to the north of Huningue. +++++++++++++ l3.4,.40. No.3. P.18. MINISTRY OF SUPPLY. ~RESS NOTICE. The need for the strictest economy in the use of paper is emphasiz~d by the Control of Paper (No.11) Order which has been made by the Minister of Supply to come into operation from midnight on Saturday. The new Order reduces the amount of paper and paper boc-,rd which paper mills may supply to customers or use in manufacture during the three ;nonths March, April and May, 1940, from 6.0 per cent. to 30 per cent. of the amount supplied or manufactured in the same period last year, except under licence. Licences already issued to supply or convert paper are reduced by 50 per cent. The effect of this retrospective cut is that only a small quantity of paper will be supplied in future except under licence. 'l'he Paper Control will issue licences to supply or convert paper only for purposes essential in the national interest, and owners of stocks of paper are therefore advised to exercise the utmost economy in their use as it may not be possible to sanction further supplies vmen those stocks are exhausted.
