INTRODUCTION This bulletin gives information about scholarships and loan funds which the University administers or helps to administer in order to provide financial assist· ance to undergraduate students at The University of Texas at Austin. Some of the scholarships and loans listed herein will be for both graduate and undergraduate students. Scholarships are awarded in accordance with the conditions set forth by the donor. In general, these requirements are: (1) scholastic standing above average; (2) good character; and (3) financial need. Additional requirements may be set forth under the eligibility paragraph of each scholarship. The University participates in the federally funded Educational Opportunity Grants Program, whereby a limited number of undergraduate students with ex· ceptional financial need are given grants for their first four years of college study. Since the grants can be no more than one-half of the assistance awarded to any student, loans, scholarships, and certain on-campus jobs are used as matching funds. Depending upon the size of the award and unless different method of payment is specified under the terms of the award, one-half of the full amount of the award will be paid at registrntion time in September and one-half at registration time in January. Unless otherwise noted, funds are held by the University Auditor and scholarship checks are distributed by the office or department making the award, while loan checks are normally distributed by the Bursar. The University is fortunate in having a number of loan funds at its disposal from which to make loans to deserving students. There are a number of emergency loan funds from which small emergency loans are made for short periods of time. Unless otherwise noted, the interest rate on these loans is 4 per cent per annum. Emergency loans usually carry a minimum service charge. Of particular interest to students seeking ways in which to finance their education is the fact that the University participates in several long-term low interest loan programs. Included among these are the National Defense Student Loan Program, Texas Opportunity Plan Loan Program, and Federally Insured Loan Program. Through co·operation with the Federal government, State government, and commercial lending institutions, the University is able to offer loans of sufficient size and liberal repayment provisions to meet the major portion of the students' college expenses. The University is grateful to its many alumni and friends, whose interest and participation have made possible the program of scholarships and loans. The University is eager to increase the number of scholarships and other aids available to its students and invites inquiries from all those who are interested. See Bequests and Other Gifts, page 7. BOW TO USE THIS BULLETIN This bulletin is divided into two types of aids: scholarships and loan funds. The scholarship part of the bulletin is divided by colleges and schools (Arts and Application Procedure Sciences, Business Administration, etc.), preceded by a listing of general scholarships not limited to specific majors. Scholarships in each group are alphabetized. The loan fund division of the bulletin is not divided but alphabetically arranged. At the end of the bulletin is a general index. It is arranged alphabetically by name of scholarship or loan fund. APPLICATION PROCEDURE Application forms for loans or scholarships administered by the Office of Student Financial Aids are available through that office upon request. All forms should be filled out completely and carefully and filed with the Director of Stu· dent Financial Aids by the dates listed below: Full Academic Year: Entering Freshmen-March 1 All others -June 1 Spring only All students -November 1 Summer only (no scholarship awards in summer) All students -April 1 A transcript of all academic work completed to date of application must be submitted. In addition, a financial statement processed by American College Test· ing Program or College Scholarship Service is required. These statements are available from secondary school principals or guidance counselors or upon request from the Office of Student Financial Aids. Students who feel they may qualify for one of the scholarships or loans administered through another administrative office, Department Chairman, or Dean's Office of the various colleges and schools are urged to make direct inquiries concerning application procedures not stated in this bulletin. Applicants should pay close attention to all instructions and comply with the announced filing dates. Incomplete applications can not be considered. Applica· tions received after the due date will be reviewed only if there are funds remaining after all applications received on or before the filing date have been considered. The recipient of a scholarship usually desires to write a letter of appreciation to the donor if he is still living. Such a letter may be sent in care of the Director of Student Financial Aids, The University of Texas at Austin, Box 7758, University Station, Austin, Texas 78712. BEQUESTS AND OTHER GIFrS The University of Texas has in recent years become more and more frequently the recipient of bequests and donations from public-spirited alumni and citizens of Texas and other states who see in the state university a means of serving the present and the future. Gifts range in size from $5.00 and less to $500,000 and more. The University has permanently endowed trust funds, which are administered with the most scrupulous and precise attention to the terms and conditions laid down by the donors. The University is always desirous of widening its field of service by receiving scholarships, loan funds, libraries, buildings, and other equipment. Correspondence on the subject of needs is solicited and will receive prompt, candid replies. Inquiries may be directed to the attention of The University of Texas System Development Board, Austin, Texas 78712. Persons who wish to place property in trust permanently for the benefit of education may well remember that The University of Texas is a creature of the Texas Constitution and is the capstone of the entire public system of education in Texas. The form of bequest given below is not intended to take the place of the services of a competent attorney in the drafting of a will, but it may be suggestive and stimulating to the mind of a public-spirited citizen contemplating the making of a will or a gift during his or her lifetime. A form of bequest is as follows : I give to the Board of Regents of The University of Texas System, as trustees, for the use and benefit of The University of Texas System (describe the property). This trust shall be called (designate the name). The purpose of the trust to be carried out by the trustees is singly, or in any combination, the installation, establishment, support, and/ or maintenance of (state purpose) . If the purpose of this trust becomes impracticable, or if by reason of changed conditions its further execution becomes unnecessary or unwise in the judgment of the trustees, such trustees, acting by a majority vote, may designate another purpose which they may deem more appropriate under the circumstances, and the purpose so designated shall thereupon become the purpose of this trust. Neither this trust, nor any fund or property arising therefrom, in whatever form it may take, shall ever be any part of the Permanent University Fund, nor shall the Legislature have power or be in anywise authorized to change the purposes hereof, or to divert such trust, fund, or property from the purposes herein set out.
