Faubus Action Foolhardy N o matter what may come as Ihe result of tho Faubus-Little Rock school batt lo, peo ple are not likely to change their opinions. Lines of battle are clearly drawn — and have been even before the controversy started. Conclusions were reached from emotion ally charged traditional issues. Few’ tangible facts come to light: Faubus said he has rea son to believe there would be violence and called out the National Guard— that’s about all we know. Since the incident flared early in Septem ber, people— on the basis of pro-determined issues— have rabidly debated the Faubus ac tion with arguments of: • integration versus segregation, with many hinting Faubus himself is using the Little Rock incident as an appeal to these emotions from furtherance of his own political a m bitions. • state's rights versus federal supremacy, an Issue which has brought the constitutions of the United States and Ar ka n sa s into vio lent disagreement. • and speculations as to whether citizens would protest integration with violence In the Little Rock situation, Faubus has said he thought there would be trouble, but bas not said what; the mayor of Little Rock and many Little Rock citizens have said other wise. Rather than merely arguing legal and moral issues (which do enter in), it is im perative to look at w hat has happened as a result of Governor Faubus’ act; • it has and will delay smoothness of prog ress of integration for many years — set back its advances at a time when headway was being made. (Faubus has said that Hie Supreme Court’s order must be carried out.) • it bas produced an excellent mass of prop aganda for critical newspapers abroad at a time w hen prestige of the United States is of vital imfiortance. • it has served to further alienate radical in our own country; now, more elements than ever before, will it be harder for them to he patient. f5eeau.se of these results, his action even if legal -can only he considered dangerous, foolhardy, unwise. And if the Governor is playing with hu man dignity and human emotions only to further his own political career, then his labeled unethical, dis action can only bo — MIMS honest, displease.
